      Love this move – Europe should have cut off its dependence on Russian gas entirely – the fact they still buy it is directly funding the war on Ukraine. Now if only they could stop buying it through India as well would be swell.

      Ukraine have been clear on this for a year now.

      Bye bye 50% of Russia’s last remaining pipeline capacity to Europe.

      2021 – 180bcm (billion cubic metres)

      2022 – 80bcm

      2023 – 40bcm

      2024 – ~30bcm

      2025 – 20bcm (est)

      You can see why Gazprom had a loss of $5.9bn last year, and are on track to double that loss this year. <tinyviolin/>

      So at least we’ll greet 2025 with a Europe practically free of Russian gas.

      Is anyone else getting the vibe that Ukraine is no longer just attempting to defend itself but now taking the steps necessary to define itself as THE power of that region?

      I’m not saying this is a bad thing, I’d prefer a democratic Ukraine over authoritarian Russia any day. I’m just stating that I think they have fully embraced they idea that they aren’t just a western sword, but can also become a shield of their region

      Let’s hope this gets countries (like Austria which has actually increased its dependence on Russian gas since the start of the war to 98%) to actually change their gas supplier or be reminded to fear God and how terribly cold winter can be.

      It’s incredible to me that Ukraine has let this flow for so long while Russia wages war on them. It should have been blown up on day one.

      Countries have had several years to prepare and plan for it. Those who didn’t bother will have to change the hard way.
