A Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet was destroyed in a crash on Monday, according to a U.S. official, just weeks after the first of the American-made aircraft arrived in Ukraine.
Initial reports indicate the jet wasn’t shot down by enemy fire, although the incident occurred during a massive Russian missile barrage across the country on Monday, the official said. Rather, the crash was likely a result of pilot error.
Ukraine used the jets for the first time in combat to shoot down Russian missiles during the strikes this week, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The Ukrainian Air Force wouldn’t confirm the crash or the status of the pilot. The Pentagon referred questions to the Ukrainian Air Force for comment.
The news that one of Ukraine’s few F-16s has been destroyed is a major blow to Kyiv, which had pleaded for the jets for months before President Biden finally gave the green light for European countries to transfer the aircraft last year.
Kyiv hopes the advanced Western aircraft will give its forces an edge on the battlefield, particularly to shoot down incoming Russian missiles and help protect troops on the front lines. But they are also vulnerable to Russian air defense missiles and present a high-value target for Moscow’s forces.
Zelensky announced on Aug. 4 that the first of 80 promised F-16s had arrived in Ukraine. The Ukrainian air Force didn’t provide numbers, but a second U.S. official said a total of six aircraft had arrived and Ukraine has six pilots trained to fly them.

Why do governments refuse to speak about the pilot’s status? Is this a protocol during war thing?
Likely a pilot mistake.
Anyway this is pretty bad. Ukraine only gets slightly over 20 F16 this year. Losing one just like this hurts quite a bit.
Lawn darts at it again
The most important question is the pilot’s status. There are more Vipers on the way already, but getting a new pilot will take many months of training.
Well, that’s disappointing. Russian propaganda would absolutely use this to show Ukrainian pilots in a negative way, regardless of the actual reason for this crash. Hopefully the pilot is ok.
The crash date coincides with the Iskander strike on the airbase the -16s are stationed at. They already announced a pilot death yesterday. I’m thinking one of the pilots/craft got tagged on the ground.
The loss of the airframe is unfortunate considering the relative rarity of them in Ukraine at the moment, but hardly insurmountable. Airframes are going to be easy to replace, especially with so many countries starting to replace F-16’s with F-35’s.
Far more unfortunate is the loss of a trained pilot, both for the fact that a man is dead, but also because they’re pretty much irreplaceable at the moment. The training program for Ukrainian pilots is way behind schedule, so while they can stand to lose airframes, they can’t afford to lose pilots.
It’s just a machine. We must send them more! 😎
What block did they get? Bet it doesn’t have Auto GCAS.
This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://liveuamap.com/en/2024/29-august-wall-street-journal-quoting-a-us-official-a-ukrainian) reduced by 93%. (I’m a bot)

The crash of a Ukrainian F-16 is unfortunate, especially given their limited supply, and it highlights the challenges of training pilots and the risks involved in wartime operations.
Is the pilot dead? Losing the aircraft is one thing (F16 are like Honda’s everyone has one) but it’s another to lose a pilot.
These pilots are still very raw since the training time is condensed, I suspect we’ll get a few more of these over time just due to inexperience. It happens to more experienced pilots too. It’s sad but we know there are more F16s and pilots on the way and for now the focus is just on getting the existing pilots stick time in low pressure combat missions (air defense in friendly skies) so they build confidence and knowledge.
whoops
Russia is saying it killed a pilot and plane during a missile strike. Is this the one? There’s so much disinformation coming from both sides
I mean its gonna happen. It’s war. My heart goes out to the pilot and his family. Hopefully we can learn something from this and less people will die and equipment will be lost going forward.
Was just confirmed that the pilot “MoonFish” has died as well https://x.com/OstapYarysh/status/1829189607789080994 🙁 Rest in Peace
Flying fucking darts. The 18 is superior and why the US doesn’t sell them. The 16 is done if the engine is gone. It does not glide. It plummets nose first to the ground. Locking pilots into their seats. The G’s do not allow the pilot to eject. F16s are effectively flying coffins.
Damn.
Well that’s what could happen when you use them, I guess. Here’s hoping they lose as few as possible and get as many new ones as possible.
It didn’t crash. The Ukranian MoD fucked up by accidentally revealing the location of the F-16s, and the F-16 was struck while on the ground.

Expected something like this, ngl, it’s just impossible for there to not be a crash when the pilots don’t have enough experience nor comfortable levels of training. I expect to see 3 more crashes or deaths by the end of the year.
Ukraine’s got the equipment, but manpower and experience has been waning. Pyrrhic victory for Russia seems to be inevitable.
solution? send more stuff.
every win russia makes is another reason to give ukraine more stuff
Hey, complex machines of war blow up every day. Sorry that it happened to Ukraine, but we dont send em weapons to sit em in a warehouse. This will happen like the occasional Abrams and Himars. We should all appreciate the bravery of Ukrainians taking risks trying to learn a complex weapon system.
Please send two for every one trashed
