The only thing I really know is the building was built by the Knights Hospitaller, a Christian Military Order from the Crusader period that most specifically provided free Medical assistance to the poor and pilgrims on they’re way to the holy land, but I’d presume you’re familiar with them of your familiar with Malta. Id say it was painted by someone in or associated with the order.
Why not ask the staff at the museum? Or did you only think to after lol.
