I am curious about “Latvian Lynx” wild cat bread:

    1. Have any one of you seen them in the wilderness when you take a walk in the forest or just in captivity in a zoo?
    2. How do they behave with strangers? If you meet with them in the wilderness do they attack you or they just run away and try to hide?
    3. I have seen some pictures on google that some people shote them down. Are they endangered or quite common and cause a lot of trouble for animal keepers and farmers?
    4. Is this kind of a “national” animal or just one of many natural wild animals that live in Latvia?

  2. We have a stable lynx population and even recently we did hunt them by small numbers. Now it’s illegal.
Lynx are super aware of their surroundings and they will hear humans at least 1km away. They will avoid humans if they can. So it is super rare that people see them. When you talk to old hunters who have been in woods all their life, they can count on one hand fingers how many times they have seen a live lynx in wilderness. It’s rare to see one. But it doesn’t mean that we don’t have them.
It’s not our national animal, we have a lot of wildlife in our nature.

I saw a lynx one time while solo kayaking the Gauja River near Krimulda. It came out from the reeds and drank from the river.
