SS: The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia aims at revitalizing bilateral relations and securing strategic deals with President Vladimir Putin. During his 26-hour visit to Russia for the 22nd Annual Summit, discussions are expected to cover a wide range of topics including energy, security, trade, investment, health, education, culture, tourism, people-to-people exchanges, and the war in Ukraine. The increasing global support for nuclear energy has driven uranium prices up, with a tight market projected until 2029. Cooperation in the civilian nuclear sector remains outside the scope of US sanctions on Russia due to the Ukraine conflict. Rosatom previously supplied nuclear fuel to Kudankulam in 2022 and 2023. India’s Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said, “Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant units 1 and 2 have already become operational, and the work is progressing on units 3 and 6.” He further added Moscow “remains an important partner for India’s energy security and defense.” India’s domestic uranium production is primarily from Jharkhand, but reserves are dwindling. Other potential mining sites in Andhra Pradesh and Meghalaya have not met expectations, leading to greater reliance on imports from countries like Kazakhstan, Russia, France, Uzbekistan, and Canada. The military agreement will enhance logistics support, including fuel and spare parts exchange for Russian warships in the Indian Ocean and Indian vessels in the Arctic. This move comes as new shipping routes open in the Arctic due to receding ice caps.
