Given labor shortages and military recruitment challenges across many western societies, Grygiel analyzes how European nations can muster sufficient forces to deter conflict and to prevail in war should it arise. Ultimately he argues that European nations must “sustain a vibrant patriotism,” because “Only a deeply shared sense of nationhood can overcome the temptation of an easy and comfortable exit—and engender a willingness to sacrifice.”
