Gefällt irgendjemandem Renzo Pianos Einzug in Valletta? Ich war kürzlich wieder in Valletta und kann einfach nicht darüber hinwegkommen, wie fehl am Platz und seltsam es aussieht … wie eine Nadel im Auge (oder zwei). Gefällt es dir?

Yeah I like it! Especially compared to the old “coach garage” entrance it used to be. The wall and tall spikes look like giants standing guard.

Honestly I hated it at first but now I’m used to it. I do wish they kept some type of door though even if in the same style as it is now.

I think you need to see it as part of the whole entrance project.  The 60s gate would have looked weird, even if cleaned, in the context of the new paving and the parliament house.

I like how it all turned out, one of the rare times we got a regeneration project right imo

  4. The enterence is alright. I don’t really like our parliament building (I think it’s the parliament) the one that kinda looks like a cheese grater and has glass walls on the base.

I didn’t really like it but it did grow on me over the years and now I do. As others said I love the clean design and openness which shows the city and invites you into it. The metal pointy things seem to resemble swords held up in salute or respect as one passes but don’t really know what they mean.

    Yes, it’s really nice.

I don’t think this picture does it justice though.

  7. It doesn’t match the rest of the city. Nor does the parliament building.

No. It’s awful. I loved the old entrance. So much nicer to look at. Malta doesn’t suit all these modern buildings.

  9. I am a Canadian, and my father is from Malta. I recently just visited Valletta, and the place is stunning. We don’t have something like this here. I understand that most are used to it, being that you live there, I had zero complaints about anything I saw on the islands

  10. I don’t like it, what was Renzo Piano thinking? It’s a fortified city **without** a gate. It feels wrong

I’m not 100%, but I think this area was the only proper entrance to Valletta coming from Floriana/outside towns. It is a Fortified City, and it always had a gate since Valletta was built., Even considering the many versions of the gate that got knocked down and re-built over the years, there was always a gate.

I wish they did a refreshed arch rather than this. It just looks like two flag poles without flags.

I love it tbh. First time ever I visited Malta 🇲🇹 and would love to move over. Get away from this miserable weather here in the uk 🇬🇧

Yes much better than before. A cleverly designed modern designed entrance that respects and appreciates the late Medieval characteristics of Valletta

I’m Maltese, and I do – and while we’re at it, I also really like the parliament building.

I like it BUT we’ve lost the feeling of what it is like to enter a Baroque fortress city.

The entrance is great. Needs some ceremonial guards to slap the people who think they can stop and have a convo in the middle of the bridge though.

I adore it, as a visitor it was amazing to see. I don’t think Maltese appreciate how unique and cool valetta is

wish it had some form of gate style thing, doesn’t smell like piss anymore tho so i guess that’s 1 thing solved

Needless to say, needle less is the way to go for the gate.

    I’ll show myself out.

  21. Nope, looks ugly and over-simplified. Feels like a hole in the wall instead of a proper entrance

  22. Better photo of the current gate: https://www.instagram.com/p/CBNdEbeD85G/?igsh=ZmJnODZ6c3Bud244

Previous gate: (1964-2011, 4th gate by Bergonzo) is Mussolini-era Fascist rationalist architecture and terrible.

To understand the design of the gates (Bergonzo’s and Renzo Piano’s) you have to look at a much bigger picture for a redesign of Valletta’s entrance that includes the Opera house/parliament building.

It’s grown on me. I hated it when I was younger and it was built, but now I quite like it.
