This isn’t newly spotted at all… goes back quite a few years

  2. Deadmanx132489 on

Dear god let that that percentage be wrong and its a higher chance.

  3. josephphilip22 on

Oh, please. We could use an earth-ending asteroid right about now.

  4. Abdul_Exhaust on

Oh yes, deliver me into a disaster that humans did not create!

  5. NoTechnology1308 on

Oh thank god. It can’t come soon enough. Maybe we should send a mission to redirect. Just incase it misses. That would be a disaster.

I feel like we could all benefit from a lil existential threat right now

Let me just fix that headline:

“Asteroid is like all the others and isn’t going to hit Earth”

My wife gave birth to my first child last year. I picked a really bad time to start caring about the future.

Can we increase the chance or are we just gonna roll the bones on this one?

Asteroid rolled a Nat 1. Feels bad. DM pls let it reroll, it is new to the game.

Holy shit lol didn’t they just make a movie about this happening and no one could be bothered about it?

  12. Here come totally original comments “oh those odds are too short”, “good, humanity was a mistake”, etc. Same thing, every time something like this is posted

I wonder how long until they claim it’s actually not an asteroid

  14. This has been reposted so many times over the past few days. Come on.

  15. Since 90% of the commenters can’t be bothered to read the article, here’s the size:

    > First spotted last month by a telescope in Chile, the near-Earth asteroid — designated 2024 YR4 — is estimated to be 130 to 330 feet (40 to 100 metres) across.

For reference, the Tunguska event asteroid was about 50-60m.

    Gpt:

A newly discovered asteroid, designated 2024 YR4, has a slightly over 1% chance of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032. The asteroid measures between 130 to 330 feet (40 to 100 meters) in diameter. Scientists are monitoring its trajectory, and as more data becomes available, the risk assessment may change.

If asteroid 2024 YR4 (40–100 meters in diameter) were to impact Earth, the effects would depend on its size, speed, and impact location. Here’s what could happen:

    1. Local to Regional Damage

If it lands in a populated area, it could cause widespread destruction, similar to the 1908 Tunguska event, which flattened 800 square miles of forest.

Urban impacts could result in severe casualties and infrastructure damage.

    2. Airburst Possible

If it enters at a shallow angle, it may explode mid-air, like the Chelyabinsk meteor (2013) (20m wide), but much more powerful, potentially 10–100 times stronger.

    3. Tsunami Risk (if ocean impact)

If it hits water, a tsunami could form, threatening coastal regions.

    4. No Global Catastrophe

Unlike a dinosaur-extinction-level impact (>1 km asteroid), this wouldn’t trigger a global disaster.

However, the local and regional effects could be severe.

NASA and other space agencies are closely monitoring it to refine predictions.

Damn. That means we’re gonna have to see Mahommes win 7 more Super Bowls. I might be rooting for the asteroid at that point.

  18. God I hope so. It’d be nice to just hit the reset button. We tried and failed

  19. Quick_Interaction608 on

Oh okay, this is definitely going to happen then. These days I simply ask myself, “what’s the worst thing that could possibly happen” and assume that it will, hasn’t failed me in a while

  20. fenderampeg on

Ya know, everyone is joking here but a 1% chance is still a chance. We really need to work on our detection and mitigation strategies for these things.
I mean, it’s gonna happen at some point right?

  21. BoredMan29 on

Eh. We’re taking bigger risks with the survival of the species.

Interesting, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one listed with a Torino Scale of 3 before
