This analysis covers historical investment returns by asset class from 1985 to 2024, covering 12 asset classes — including stocks / bonds in the U.S., Canada, and beyond.

The data shows **annual real total returns** (i.e., adjusted for inflation and dividends).

  2. That is pretty good, I would have liked if you added a “red line” to separate tthe investments that went into the negatives. (or any marker in general)

Also, I’m not great at financial stuff, but how are bonds in the negatives? Or does it mean buying a bond and then trying to sell it? Because a bond will always yield money, maybe sometimes less than inflation but there are times we see -19% losses (2022) and I don’t get it

  3. Interesting analysis, thank you for putting this together. Would be helpful to add crypto to this list.

  4. Great idea, but I think it would also be informative to have a plot where each row was a fixed asset (i.e. row 1 is large cap) so you could see the variation in performance of each asset type over time.
