Good morning,
Hope its acceptable that I ask this in this group, if not close/delete it. I recently watched the series of Quisling and by coincidence two letters written by him was offered to me. I tried to post this in a collectors forum, but since this is a norwegian paper and part of norway’s ww2 history it wasnt to much help. I got the item from a relative prominent figure in Norway, but he wants to be anonymous and said he got ahold of it 35 years back from a person who collected NS things and knew Quisling personally.
The first letter is before the war, and the second and most exciting letter is adressed to Arthur Quist with the letter saying “Den Norske Legion” from Quisling in 1942. He was a prominent Norwegian military officer, Nazi collaborator, and Olympic equestrian, and he led the Waffen-SS’s Norwegian Legion during World War II, actively supporting the German occupation and advancing Nazi interests in Norway. He is a divisive figure, balancing military leadership with controversial political alignment and was convicted as a traitor after the war. At the time of the letter he was stationed at the Leningrad front.
The first letter reads (transcribed and translated by me):
“Ministerpresidenten”
(Translation: “The Prime Minister”)
**Oslo, 24.2.42.**
“Herr major Quisling,
Hvis De anser det mulig, vil jeg anbefale at løytnant O. Kaunås, efter å ha meldt seg til tjeneste, igjen kan få permisjon til Norge, da hans mor ligger dødssyk.
Ærbødigst,
Vidkun Quisling
P.S. Kaunås er NS-medlem siden 1933.
V.Q.”
**Translation:**
“Mr. Major Quisling,
If you find it possible, I would recommend that Lieutenant O. Kaunås, after reporting for duty, be granted leave to return to Norway, as his mother is gravely ill.
Respectfully,
Vidkun Quisling
P.S. Kaunås has been a member of the Nasjonal Samling (NS) since 1933.
V.Q.”
My question is that I want help from people who might know anything about this letter, or where I should go to get information. I havent been able to translate the last letter, so anyone is welcome to assist with it! His handwriting is awfull.
Why so fascinated by a man who brought so much hate and violence? Obsessing and glorifying nazis doesnt strike me as a hobby for mentally healthy people…
