  1. Hamburg is an okay city for cyclists, but definitely not safer than average.

Seeing the data would be interesting. Since relating number of fatalities to population means a smaller city with a lot of cyclists will inevitably score bad on this (if fatalities are reported the same everywhere in theory too).

Where is Amsterdam? That mythical pro-bike city loved by so many YouTubers?

  4. LiquoricePigTrotters on

I live in Birmingham and I have to say this is the biggest load of bullshit ever! The roads here are outrageously dangerous for pedestrians. 716 pedestrians hit by cars between Jan-Oct 2024.

Barcelona? Safe for pedestrians and cyclists? You’ve never been there.

  6. Firm-Ad-5462 on

What about Venice? I’m sure it’s the safest city for pedestrians.

  7. Based on the number of fatalities among cyclists? I am sure Naples is one of the safest out there. Zero cyclists means zero fatalities.

Amsterdam on the other hands has millions of cyclists, so there must be an accident every now and then, making it unsafe in this chart.

If Vienna finally banned those motorized “Ich bin ein Fahrrad” bastards from all areas with pedestrians and back to the streets only, I’d agree.

  9. Brussels is considered by many the unsafest city for biking in Belgium. I’m very surprised.

  10. UltimateAdmiral on

How are NL and Denmark missing lmao, this is complete BS without them

  11. Dear_Duty_1893 on

The Netherlands and Switzerland not being on this list tells me already it’s complete bullshit

  12. Comfortable-Slip2599 on

Brussels?? Seriously??? What are the statistics behind this, because there’s barely any cyclists because it’s wildly considered unsafe outside of some commuter roads with cycle lanes. I guess that would account for the low number of fatalities/capita. In other words a pretty BS map.

It is clear that in Barcelona you can escape pickpockets faster if you go by bicycle. But if you are a pedestrian, you can already have good legs…

  14. augustus331 on

    This is absolute BS.

The Netherlands is built as a **country** to accomodate cycling. It’s not even mentioned. Seriously, Bilbao is safer than a car-free city such as Groningen?

    Nope.

“You can use statistics to prove just about anything, 60% of people know that”

    Homer

    GRANADA MENTIONED 🗣️🇪🇸🗣️🦅🗣️🇪🇸🇪🇸🦅🇪🇸🏰🦅🕌☀️🏔️🦅

  17. Barcelona and Bilbao are very safe for pedestrianas if you have a knife proof vest.

  18. WarWonderful593 on

There are low cycling casualties in Birmingham because no one is stupid enough to try and cycle around it. (Source: I am from Birmingham)

  19. Barcelona safe?… bruh, what a load of BS. Even Lisbon feels safer and thats saying a lot..

  20. Hamburg?! But not Copenhagen and Amsterdam? No way.
Cycling infrastructure is abysmal in large parts of Hamburg.
Something is off with their data.

  21. Difficult_Distance51 on

You should use the number of people cycling and walking, not the total population.

  22. I can say that Granada bikes infrastructure is pretty much lacking and not being used as much compared to all those cities, so my guess the low percentage is because it’s not being used much, so don’t believe in this stats as meaning that Granada is a good city for bikes lol

  23. deceptiveprophet on

From personal experience I think Helsinki feels safer as a pedestrian than Wien.

  24. International_Ad1590 on

I’m surprised seeing Barcelona and not any cities from Netherlands.

  25. MagicPeach9695 on

not a single dutch city? this is bullshit lol. even the smallest dutch town would be safer for both pedestrians and cyclists than most of the major cities in the world.

  26. Another ranking with a flawed methodology, that tells us absolutely nothing about the experience of being a pedestrian or cyclist in a given city. Just like that ranking of train companies a while ago.

  27. Basically looks like it’s a mix of cities with super concentrated city centers (so they have most pedestrian traffic being completely isolated from other traffic) and big cities where the sheer number of suburbs too far from the center for cycling drives down the rates.

  28. thezestypusha on

Less pedestrians/cyclist=less pedestrian/cycling accidents, who would have thought?

  29. Dazzling-Tough6798 on

Ignoring the weird list of cities included, that’s simply not where Hamburg is located. Even if the methodology of the message behind this map was worth listening to, the execution of the map itself is just crap. MapGore, not MapPorn.

  30. The sheer number of cyclists I’ve (almost) run over in Barcelona and it still scores 79% on this list??

  31. Dry_Name_9617 on

Granada? Travaled through Spain and Granada was stresfull af. Didnt feel safe there. Cant compare to Barcelona
