  1. You could include Greenland’s flag to the Nordic family. It might not use a cross but it’s offset, exactly to be similar to the Nordic cross.

Montenegro and Albania, and by extent Poland, form a small family of Byzantine flags, Serbia used to be in this group but they adopted the Slavic tricolor.

The SADR isn’t a recognized country so it shouldn’t be coloured blue.

Is this the long awaited collab between r/MapPorn and r/vexillology ?!!?!!?!??!!

Not sure if your criteria requires both design *and* cultural connection? Or just design would qualify?

Italy, France, Ireland, Belgium & Romania all use tri-colour vertical panels.
There are also a ton in Europe that use the tri-colour horizontal panels (some with symbol, some without).

  6. Russian flag belongs to the Dutch family tree. By extension the Balkan belongs to the Dutch family tree as grandchildren. South Africa too.

vietnam and china can go into a family together.

Bulgaria despite replacing the blue with green is also inspired by the pan-Slavic colors.

You also forgot to label the family of flags inspired by the Argentinian flag.

  8. How’s Argentina and Uruguay pan-arab? Their flags are white and blue (you don’t even list blue as part of the list) and I don’t think they have a common origin (which would be the more interesting thing and not the coincidental colour choice)

  9. Croatia and Austria are family too, both come from an ancient red-white-red Lorraine crest.

  10. Pan-coincidence colors: Red, Yellow, Blue: Romania, Moldova, Andorra, Chad.

Türkiye, Tunisia, Algeria, Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore and Mauritania using the crescent and star.

There’s another possible group – the flags adopted by revolutionary movements that include Marxist symbols like the red banner, yellow five pointed star, or tools used by workers. They include China, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Angola and Mozambique.

  13. Missing the Stars and Stripes family- Chile, Cuba, Liberia, Malaysia, and the USA off the top of my head.

Nice map! Also, i think that Zambia and Zimbabwe should be coloured as Pan-African colors.

  15. VoidyArtist11 on

I mean, Puerto Rico and Cuba (i think). USA and Liberia too if you think about it.

  16. Definitely should add East India Company inspired flags (USA, Malaysia, Liberia)

  17. Royakushka on

What about communist Asia flags? (Like China Vietnam and so on, I’m not sure that is the name though)

  18. All the European tricolors originate from each other and can be traced back to the Dutch flag, which was later adopted by the French revolution and spread it across europe. The Russian was based on the French one which was later spread to the other Slavic countries. So most trixolors should be one group

I’m wondering if Bangladesh, Palau and Japan could qualify. They’re not similar in terms of culture, people or religion, but they are the only three (of my knowledge) that share this kind of two-color circle design. It might not be 100% since Japan’s circle is centered, Bangladesh is slightly off center, and so is Palau.
