    TL;DR:

The long-running protest group, whose slogan is “smash Christmas”, has marched on Tokyo’s streets every Christmas Eve for the last 17 years.

It describes itself as a “psychological safety net for unpopular people all over the world” and the name for its members in Japanese, “himote”, specifically refers to men who aren’t popular with women.

Christmas Eve is seen as one of the most romantic date nights of the year in Japan but this year, Tokyo’s streets were a little emptier.

The group posted on X before the big day: “Regarding this year’s Crush Christmas demonstration, due to various circumstances our representative was unable to go to carry out the application process…”

    It is just sad.

“Last year about 15 members of the group marched for half an hour near Tokyo’s Shibuya Station.”

And not that many people give much of a f*ck anyway.

Women def don’t love men who can’t finish their own fucking assignments.

  4. It should be noted that even though Japan is majority non-Christian, “Christmas” entered mainstream Japanese culture as a shopping event and “special date” occasion. It’s like a mix between Black Friday and Valentine’s Day almost completely detached from its Christian origin. So rest assured that angry Japanese men won’t storm churches and burn the buildings to the ground. It’s just that there is a certain percentage of men in Japan (like in most Western societies) who feel increasingly isolated from society and meanigful romantic relationships and seek to vent their frustrations.

    Cultural context:

In Japan, Christmas is a day where couples have romantic outings. They do traditional Christmas things like eat KFC, strawberry shortcake and have a romantic dinner.

New years is the day you spend with family.

  6. Wait why are the comments taking this so seriously lmao it’s a joke about being sick of lovey Christmas couples that fell though because people were too lazy to deal with all the paperwork for a joke. Complaining about them is basically routine for every single person in Japan. Would you say this Onion skit about [stoning happy valentines day couples](https://youtu.be/lJTfNIPGhlQ?si=odFERdpd2WC-9haj) is also a moral emergency???

Remember kids, whatever you are, don’t ask for permission to protest.

  8. Pretty much everything I learned about Japan was by watching Midnight Diner. Looked forward to the New Year’s Eve episodes.

Only 1.5% of Japan is Christian, why the fuck are they needing to protest Christmas in Japan? Though I guess it’s the same reason why bigots go after Mosques.

Maybe the Japanese don’t mind how small KFC chicken pieces are now. Not sure if they’re using chickens or quail now.
