A lot of the times when I read about people dying in the news I make up some rationalization to avoid the weight of feeling sad. This time my thinkmeat is failing me.

Landing gear went to shit it seems like, thing was grinding on the tarmac all the way. RIP, horrible.

Voepass. LATAM. Singapore Airlines. Saurya. JAL. Azerbaijan Airlines. Jeju Air.
Terrible year for aviation related accidents. The world feels like a weirdly depressing place these days. It’s not like we did not have tragedies before but I have never felt so hopeless.

Before its another OhNoBoEiNg thread someone actually present some evidence of another failure before just pointing out the type and scare mongering.

What did it hit at the end?

Another? Ok, maybe I should keep away from planes after all.

It seems like it hit a wall at the end. Shouldn’t it have a significant stretch of flat land for cases like that?

I’ll say video tends to make crashes seem more often but still, sad. RIP to those folks. Condolences to their families.

Why would you put a wall at the end of the runway those poor people

Apparently they tried to land once without the landing gear and went back around to try again.
Would have been ok without that strange bank/wall at the end of the runway. Whose idea was that?!
RIP.

“The accident occurred as Jeju Air flight 7C2216, carrying **175 passengers and six crew** on a flight from the Thai capital Bangkok. […] **Two people were found alive and rescue operations were still under way,**”
“Aviation tracking site FlightRadar24 said the aircraft appeared to be a Boeing 737-800. Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.”
That’s horrible. The last couple months haven’t been good for South Korea.

If it’s only 28 from the video of that explosion that’s absolutely amazing..

so watching the video, obviously the landing gear failed but aside from the hydraulics, the 737 also has a cable activated free-fall mechanism that can deploy the landing gear. pretty wild if both failed, but it’s also not really possible for the pilots to just forget or not use it. second thing is, no flaps on the wings so either that was another hydraulics failure or for some reason they flew a VERY fast approach, else the plane would stall. so there’s at least one failure with the plane, likely more. we’ll have to wait for the investigation but i doubt birds are the lone cause of this.

Man this is not what I’m hoping to read as I’m sitting on a plane waiting for takeoff

To no ones surprise – it was a Boeing.

If they were attempting a land without landing gear, was this deemed the best / longest runway to do it at?

> The cause of the crash is still not known, but local media is reporting that it may have been caused by birds getting caught in the plane’s systems.
Don’t airports have adequate means of dealing with birds? This is such a long standing issue that it is surprising that a first world country’s airport have problem with birds.

The plane must have been in a state where it had to land otherwise you’d imagine that ATC would instruct the plane to circle the runway until the ground crew could do as much as possible to make the plane land more safely without the landing gear. I’m sure there is a protocol for this, which doesn’t seem was followed.

Interested in why they couldn’t do an alternate gear extension.

Hoping the casualties remain as low as possible. I know a ton of people are critically injured.
