The data is from Google trends API. I searched for related queries to keywords like “definition, dictionary, define, urban dictionary” to determine a list of words that people were searching for the definition of. I then filtered this list for words that rose in interest in 2024 to identify words that emerged this past year! More details on methodology and code is in this [article I wrote on Medium](https://towardsdatascience.com/the-hottest-slang-of-2020-according-to-google-trends-data-7bae348409b4) (from 4 years ago, when I first did this)

Line charts are built in matplotlib!

Bop seems weird to me, I remember that already starting to be commonly used a few years ago

For future research you should add the phrase “What does _____ mean” to the data too I see a lot of young people search in that way instead of just “_______ definition”

“No Diddy” mostly corresponds with news items about Sean “Diddy” Combs – the FBI search of his home in March and his arrest in September.

Has doge changed meaningfully since its introduction as a meme and then as a coin in ~2012? Is it because it had kinda trended away and the election/Elon has brough it back?

Munting is just munging. The 00’s called, they want their edgy necro-humor back.

Demure isn’t a new word though? I get that it might be coming back but it is a bit weird to look at completely new words and re-emerging ones together
