The burmese civil war is really under-recognized.
The rebels were known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam and were a largely secular group trying to secede from sri lanka.

They were active from the late 70s until 2009 and during that time firmly controlled a lot of territory. They were practically their own country with schools, TV and radio stations, public infrastructure and a lot of other things you wouldn’t normally expect from a rebel group (Obviously this isn’t supporting them, so did ISIS to a certain extent).
Because of the duration of the conflict many fighters lived their entire lives in rebel controlled territory and were fanatically dedicated to their cause.
The group used mules to own and control normal businesses all over the world then funneled that money back to them and at their peak they were estimated to be making hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
They then used this money to buy a bunch of weapons and equipment from North Korea in the 90s.

They had their own navy with fast-attack boats and even semi-submersibles and full submersibles based on narco-subs. They had an air force using ultralight planes, gyroplanes and biplanes. They had brigades dedicated to things like indirect fire from howitzers and mortars which they used in battles. They even had a dedicated brigade of highly trained suicide bombers and were pioneers in the area, combining conventional military strategy with terror and fanaticism.

The fighters from different divisions had factory-made standardized uniforms and equipment with their own camo-pattern and unit insignias and all fighters carried cyanide-pills to prevent capture.

They were also some of the first people to recognize the use of video-propaganda and had a dedicated unit called the “Truth Tigers” who’s task was to film combat.
