My Korean girlfriend officially becomes a Korean American next month. So she is no help!

When we first started dating, I asked her if she would ever move back to Korea, and her answer was this: “Oh, no. They hate women there.”

So what actually happens if this continues and they don’t start allowing A LOT of immigration?

Lots of nations have declining/ low birth rates but using the uk as an example 0.5 to 1m immigrants arrive each year to balance it. So net population is always growing.

If a country forces young people to only be busy with surviving then yes they won’t think about having kids. happening in Europe too.

No problem for older generations. They’ll just vote to open the floodgates for immigrants.

I can work all week only for food and a temporary roof and nothing else to show for it.

Isnt that true for every country now…its called peaking…the only idiots who gets hysterical is companies who needs never ending growth meaning neverending new customers.

    5. It’s too expensive to raise children, it’s too competitive if you’re a kid, when you’re an adult you’re just another one of many degree holders in Korea and you probably don’t want to have kids because it’s too expensive and you know how much it sucks growing up.

Isn’t it ironic that both North and South Koreas are hellscapes of its own sort? One is totalitarian nightmare with population too starving to reproduce, other is ultra-capitalist society where people have to work 24/7 to survive.

Unfortunately, this issue appears intractable for urbanized developed nations.

Either developed nations import immigrants or accept aging and demographic reduction. Only time will tell which is a more sustainable model.

    8. Let’s make changes so that young people can feel comfortable having children!

Ah fuck that let’s just piss and moan and then disappear as a people.

    9. This is what I call consequences. You treat women and girls like dirt and also push education and BAM!!! The women and girls are smart enough to get out. Women are tired of being doormats.

      Why should countries always grow?

This type of mentality is completely alien to me, other than the usual “our retirement system is a pyramid scheme and we are fucked if we don’t keep pumping more babies or allowing immigrants”.

A system that requires growth for the sake of growth alone, is cancer. I don’t see the issue with diminishing populations, it’s actually a good thing.

    11. Is there any historical precedent for population decline from low birth rate?
Has any population shrunk not because of war, famine, disease etc.. but because they simply stopped having kids?

And if there is, did they die out, or did ir rebound or something?

    12. King_LaQueefah on

South Korea spent $200 billion over 10+ years to try to get young people to have more babies while the reasons for the low birth rate (housing costs, etc.) remain unaddressed.

Sounds like something the USA would do. Hilarious. What a waste of money lol. They could have easily fixed their housing crisis and ensured a better standard of living for young people.

The whole first son gets everything and women are there to serve messes generations up. The korean women are very smart and amazing in business. Most well off korean american families i know have the women controlling the finances and investments. (And the ones i know who are not well off have the men refusing to allow the women control of any finances). Just my observation.

Also, in order to get themselves where they are as a nation, their population worked and studied like crazy. (To the point of what we would consider abuse). The problem is, the competition and this work ethic continues and is now a turn off. It’s just too damn hard to have a family unless you have an “in” already. Too much pressure.

Source: i have a good amount of first generation korean friends.

    14. To entice people to have children in South Korea, the govt has offered small to medium enterprises with tax breaks…..The country is LITERALLY dying, and it’s all because of rent, mortgages, and high prices of goods and services, but let’s give the corporations a break and not the ones that need it. FFS

What are the chances that North Korea wins the war because the South Koreans depopulated themselves into oblivion without anyone firing a shot.

    16. Just in time for the “post labor” world.

Especially with south Korea’s technical advantages, I think we will see that their economy will continue to outpace nations with growing populations (ie mostly African countries).

AI will drive a post labor economy where population matters much less.

You can think that people were really valuable when we were farming. More farm workers means more food for everyone. Means efficiency to put more people in the military. Means more ability to expand a nation / states influence or control.

Ukraine just had the first fully autonomous battle (only robotic units).

AI will replace most “service” sector jobs within 10 years and robotic / ai labor will follow shortly after.

What they/we need to focus on is how the new highly concentrated economic wealth will be distributed to people who effectively offer no value… Then we will learn if we are a truly compassionate species or if we will just eliminate the valueless population in favor of a much smaller group.

      JFC it’s really simple:

PEOPLE IN HYPER-CAPITALIST SOCIETIES CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO BIRTH AND CARE FOR CHILDREN.

      I wish I could all-caps that louder.

Time to start letting in millions of immigrants and destroy your culture too

Humans, as with all life, will go extinct eventually. We are not exempt. Everything is finite.

    20. Radeck8bit on

This is what capitalism does eventually. So it’ll have to end. One way or another…

      Lived in Korea from 08-11.

It’s expensive to have a kid. Also men REALLY need to step up. Women want a partner and not another man child to look after.
