Lee Jae-myung, the leader of South Korea’s Democratic Party, posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account seeking to find citizens who had bravely stood in front of armored vehicles during a recent martial law situation in Seoul on December 3rd. He used the hashtag “Bright Future of South Korea” and wrote, “Please help me find this person.” The attached video showed four citizens blocking an advancing armored vehicle with their bodies.
The video was reportedly captured by The Washington Post on December 4th. The newspaper explained that on that day, protesters in Seoul blocked military vehicles heading towards the National Assembly building, with one citizen shouting, “Go over my dead body!” Netizens reacted to Lee’s post with admiration and curiosity, expressing a desire to find and possibly interview these individuals. Some commentators drew parallels to the iconic “Tank Man” from the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests in China, where an unidentified man stood in front of a column of tanks.
