Lost some of its edge with teens not being illegal and “taboo” anymore?

Probably because they’re moving from marijuana to vape pens. Which if memory serves, vape usage has risen among teens.

Former middle school teacher here and my guess is they are turning to vaping. So many kids caught vaping in the bathrooms over the last few years.

It isn’t overly surprising. It is supposed to be a counter culture thing, if you know your parents and friends are getting stoned, it is less fun.

Also, I think it has changed the perspective of a lot of parents too. Mine never made alcohol this mystical thing for us. They never locked up their liquor. Beer was in the beer and milk fridge.

    Never drank in high school.

  5. My hypothesis is that there are far fewer drug dealers and it’s not as profitable anymore. In Oregon you can get an ounce for like $40 at the dispensary. My friends give it away. There’s much less underground dealing because of this. Teens under 18 years old can’t go to dispensaries. We smoked in HS more than drinking because it was so much easier to get than alcohol because IDs.

  6. I know tons of Gen Z and alpha that don’t use any substances alcohol, weed, nicotine, etc. which is a stark difference from my generation (millennials) and older.

I wonder if this could also just be a result of teens nowadays having less in person interaction with each other. When I was a teen, I used to smoke with all of my friends and just hang out. Studies seem to show todays teens spend more time on screens and less time interacting in person.

I like my drugs very illegal thank you very much. That illegal flavour really sells it.

  9. I’ll like to add that the loss of third spaces may also be contributing to this trend. When I was young we used to smoke and go to the mall or go skateboard or whatever. Kids now days mostly socialize online.
