  1. I’ve linked to the news release in the post above. In this comment, for those interested, here’s the link to the peer reviewed journal article:

    From the linked article:

An estimated 61.8 million people, or around 1 in 127 people are on the autism spectrum, according to the latest Australian -led research using 2021 data. This figure is substantially higher than the previous estimate of around 1 in 271 people, based on 2019 data, but the authors say that is mainly due to them changing their approach to exclude studies that probably underestimated the rates of autism. The study also found that autism spectrum disorder (ASD) was most common in people younger than 20 years old, where it ranked within the top 10 causes of non-fatal health burden, emphasising the need for early detection and developmental support for people on the autism spectrum.

It’s only common in younger people because it’s only been diagnosed in large numbers for not that many years. I assure you ASD has been a not insignificant issue since we foraged for food and hunted.

as someone on the spectrum, who’s been reading ton’s of health articles, and has an interest in science, my suspicion is either forever chemicals or pesticides. since pesticides have been in use longer,(but there might be the counterfactual of not testing in earlier decades) it seems to me that forever chemicals might be the culprit we are looking for. they are ubiquitous, global, not well known to the general public, are documented to cause all sort’s of maladies, cheap to produce, can slip under the radar when it comes to doctor visits, are well lobbied for in many nations, and are immensely profitable and create lots of well paying jobs. you do not get to numbers such as 1 in 127 without it being ubiquitous and hard to rollback. it also has great vectors such as microplastics shedding from containers, clothes, electronics, tires and furniture.

  4. It’s going to grow so much more, we don’t know how it manifests in girls, in boys and girls of other ethnicities, we only know how it shows in white kids middle class or above yet the impairment is very much real

They can’t help but pathologize everything, don’t put behaviors/traits within a disorder spectrum if they’re not debilitating, they’re proving right many people that said psychiatry was going into a rabbit hole
