For the same reason we say the people from Canton AG (and I think in the Suisse Romande they say the same about VD?) can’t drive, the people in BE are slow, etc.
Friendly banter
Believe me, we would be very upset if a French person said that Geneva was French (or that people from Geneva were French).
It is mostly a form of (bad) humor to play with prejudices.
The VD can’t drive, the VS drive and drink at the same time (you can only be arrested for too low level of alcohol), the NE are poor, the JU are peasant, FR is just a dead hole, ZH are arrogant bunch.
It is unfortunately part of our culture, and you should just reply back with the same kind of dumb BS. Most people are not even aware that these comment might hurt.
If someone keep on with the bad jokes after you notified them it was displaced, you should cut your losses and move on.
And yes, if a French citizen says Geneva is French, we would kindly reply them back that Geneva is a long way from being associated to a developing country…
On dit quatre-vingts en Genève
Just like people from TG get insulted for the way they speak
agree when talking to a swiss person would i would throw fists if a frenchman would try to take geneva from us
i haven‘t heard of these, but i‘m bot from romandie. I‘ve heard that VD doesn‘t consider GE as swiss. Don‘t know if that‘s true tho.
I am originally from Geneva, and I’ve been hearing the “So you’re French, hahaha” joke too many times to count, mostly from Vaudois. The main reasons for this comparison are:
1) Our accent is weaker and we say “Quatre-vingt” for 80 and not “huitante”. But as a matter of fact, accents are not very strong in Lausanne either, and there are many Romands that say it the same, not just people from Geneva.
2) There are many French in Geneva.
3) It is a provocation because people from Geneva hate being compared to French as our culture and accent are very different, and we are surrounded by them.
As a matter of fact, 3) is actually the main reason, and this joke is getting old, especially coming from people who don’t know or have never lived in Geneva, and think it’s funny repeating the same old mantra “hahaha Genève c’est la France”.
Agree with all of the above but as someone who has worked and lived in Geneva, some of its politics is somewhere between Paris and Bern. Paris style socialist ideas financed with taxes from P&G, luxury companies and banks is certainly unique in Switzerland.
Distinctly different from the rest of the Latin cantons and still different enough from France to be neither here nor there.
A little bit like Ticino the workplace experience can feel more French than Swiss simply because most employees could be French. Something those who work in IT or banking in Ticino know all too well, the sector is dominated by Italians.
So in summary let them talk. I wish more Swiss French would work in the German speaking part and experience the differences and similarities first hand. As far as people are concerned, we are all Swiss.
Why so serious?
It is an old custom called “Kantönligeischt”.
Not unsimilar to a rivalry between siblings.
The important thing is that it is meant to be in good faith and not really serious.
In the end, we stand together
Everyone shit talk the canton over.
