The other day, Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev said that the EU observation mission on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border should be completed. Azerbaijan is rejecting mediators in the process of delimitation and border protection. Baku had previously expressed serious complaints about the EU mission operating in Armenia, accusing it of “binocular diplomacy.”

The decision to extend the mandate of the EU mission will be made in early 2025. However, back in the spring, the Armenian parliament increased the contingent of observers to 209 people, allowing them to move freely throughout the republic.

Even if Baku hypothetically achieves the end of the EU mission mandate, the Western presence in Armenia will simply move to a different legal plane, especially considering the ambitions of the French and Americans to consolidate their position in the republic. However, now Baku and Yerevan are no longer in a hurry to sign a peace treaty, since the urging factor in the form of the retiring US presidential administration has lost its relevance.
