I wonder what retaliatory measures China might take. They have already banned Google and other Western social media platforms, so what equivalent measures could be implemented, if any? Perhaps they could simply toughen bureaucracy for Western companies in China.

US lawmakers are urging Google and Apple to remove TikTok from their app stores before a January 19 deadline. This comes after President Biden signed a law requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app or face a US ban. The lawmakers sent letters to tech leaders urging them to comply with the law, which prevents foreign-controlled apps like TikTok from being distributed or updated in the US unless they divest.

I hate TikTok for many reasons and think this is for the best, but I also worry other apps might be labeled as “national security” threats and banned as well when they clearly aren’t.

    5. Google and Meta already have their TikTok copies in place and have been for a while. The competition is being banned by the government that is [checks notes] being run by the Silicon Valley Tech Bros. Hurrah for the dystopia!
