Hören Sie mir zu, warum beginnt der geplante Rogfast-Tunnel nicht in Rennesøy, der den Tunnel verkürzt und über die derzeitige E39 weiter mit Stavanger verbunden werden könnte?

I thought about this aswell. There must be an explanation. Maybe the fjord is too shallow there?

  2. Without having looked into it, one possibility might be that they have to drill deeper to find suitable rock to build the tunnel. But this is just speculations from my side.

  3. You see the difference in depth on the map you’ve posted, that’s why.

One factor is the slope of the road. As it will be very deep the slope down and up will be long, and the gradient is limited for safety reasons.

Also the road/tunnels to Rennesøy are not up to standard, so a new/expanded road and new tunnels would need to be built. The tunnels are already a problem as with single tunnels, any traffic issue blocks E39. And there have been quite a few cases.

There may also be issued with the fjord depth, but I have not looked into that

The road from Stavanger to Rennesøy has two underwater tunnels, Boknafjordtunnelen and Mastrafjordtunnelen, which were built as a part of the Rennfast project in the 1990s.

These tunnels are starting to get old, the traffic in them is undivided, which makes it possible to cross into oncoming traffic. There have been quite a few accidents, and deaths in these tunnels over the years. They are also very steep which is not ideal for large trucks.

There is also a lot of commuting traffic coming from Rennesøy and Mosterøy into Stavanger, when Rogfast is built this traffic will be separated from the long distance traffic, which will hopefully reduce the amount of accidents in the old Rennfast tunnels.
