    Maybe he should be angry at his government for spying so much. But no, blame others.

    Crocodile tears from young CCP members.

    If you want to have some “fun”, ask your fellow Chinese ETHZ students if they or their parents are CCP members or their opinion on the CCP in general. They’ll run away before you can even blink.

    Always angry at the country justifiably shielding itself from established foreign interference, never at the one causing all the trouble by weaponising its expats and students to harass dissidents abroad and steal/sabotage scientific research for military goals. Brainwashed dictatorship citizen 101 starter pack. Womp womp.

  4. Yeah, it’s really hard to be sympathetic when China has stolen so much IP from so many countries. I’m all for protecting academic freedom and bringing international talent together, but is there any other way to deter China? Maybe the only way to stop them from continued hacking efforts is to screen students. It’s sad but what else are we supposed to do? Switzerland relies on innovation.

    [this was already in the news 2 months ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/ethz/comments/1gc2y1n/chinese_students_new_security_screening/)

    the usage of the term “screening” is dishonest and misleading

    it is no “screening” as I would understand that term, it is binary rules based automatic rejection [see here](https://ethz.ch/content/dam/ethz/associates/services/finance-and-controlling/open/Compliance/Exportkontrolle/Englisch/Fact-Sheet-Security-Screening-Master-studies.pdf)

    for MSc applications, if both of the following criteria are true then that results in automatic rejection no matter what, due to the following sentence “If there are several YES, the application will be rejected.”

    * citizenship is on [list](https://ethz.ch/content/dam/ethz/associates/services/finance-and-controlling/open/Compliance/Exportkontrolle/Englisch/List-of-embargo-and-Risk-countries.pdf)
    * study is on list (includes basically any study at ETHZ)

    that means people with citizenship on the list (for example Chinese) will be banned from doing an MSc in chemistry or physics at ETHZ

    because it is the citizenship that matters even someone with Chinese citizenship having grown up or spent a considerable time here or having done a BSc here would be automatically rejected acc. to these criteria

    I understand the motivation, but automatically rejecting students solely based on citizenship is insane

    Every interview from China

    “I am not here to steal any technology!!! I just want to borrow it. Not the same thing at all.

    I am not compromised by the authorities. My parents? Yes very much compromised and under threat. But not me. Trust me.”

  7. Can we please close those kind of discussions?

    It really invokes more hatred comments towards Chinese people than any real discussions about Switzerland. I’m a Chinese living in Switzerland and it is absolutely shitty when I read all racists comments targeting me just because of where I was born.

    Thank you.
