While I don’t love government overreach I’m not sure I can muster any argument in favour of home schooling at all. To be frank, it’s reserved entirely for the weird and abusive.

I can appreciate there’s probably edge cases, but I can’t imagine the vast majority of home schooling is actually good for the child even if well intentioned

Its either failings by social services in cases like this where they are known to police/social services or its failings by intelligence services preventing a terrorist from killing people who was known to police/intelligence services.

Nothing ever changes really does it.

This story is awful. Both parents had evidence of abuse either against this poor girl or against her siblings. She never stood a chance

The most chilling part of the 999 call was his statement “I beat her up too much”. As if there is an optimal level of beating up a child.

I read about the court case today. Absolutely one of the worst things I’ve ever read. She was beat with poles and cricket bats, burnt, bitten and hooded whilst being hog tied.

And as soon as they knew social services were told about the bruises seen by the teachers, she was removed from school where she could be watched and slightly protected.

If this change could stop one child from being abused like this, then it’s the right move.

I disagree with home schooling in principle.

The Children Act puts the need of the child first. Including above the desires of the parent to home school any child.

I defy anyone to prove that home schooling is in the long term best interests of the vast majority of children.

I know of two young adults in my extended family who have had their life chances severely impacted by well meaning attempts at home schooling them. Both have no formal qualifications and left school with poor social skills and no network of friends of their age, owing to never having mixed with children of their age nor indeed with many adults outside of the family.

I don’t think Suggs is qualified to make this kind of decisions.
