A Syrian undercover journalist who was imprisoned by the Assad regime has revealed he believes he was detained in a Damascus jail with Austin Tice, America’s longest-held hostage.

Saher al-Ahmad was charged with terrorism and held in branch 85 of the general intelligence directorate, in the Kafr Sousa neighbourhood. He told The Times that he and Tice, a freelance reporter and former US Marine, were there at the same time until as recently as 2022.

Tice, who would now be 43 years old, was kidnapped near Damascus on August 14, 2012, while he was covering the early days of the Syrian civil war. A video surfaced months later showing him blindfolded, being led by armed men in white robes as he quietly repeated the words: “Oh, Jesus.”

This is an interview with Saher al-Ahmad.
