  1. Submission Statement

The Netherlands has introduced temporary border controls at its borders with Germany and Belgium to curb irregular migration and cross-border crime, invoking Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code. The six-month measure, implemented under the far-right Freedom Party (PVV)-led government, involves random checks of vehicles and international train travelers, guided by risk analyses using camera footage and vehicle origins. While intended to reduce the “influx” of migrants, the effectiveness of these controls, managed by just 50 officers for 840 border crossings, has been questioned. Local municipalities have raised concerns about disruptions to cross-border travel, highlighting tensions between national security and Schengen’s free movement principles.
