Hi there, my parents are going to Malta next year and I’d love to be able to pinpoint any of the locations in these photos with your help, if possible. My mother’s father (in the photos) served in WWII in Malta and it would be great if she knew where he was. Understandably most of these images are probably impossible to locate, but I thought I’d check. Photo 10 we think may actually not be in Malta, possibly when he came back to Scotland.

Number three looks similar to the houses on Sliema front. Only a few remain. Near the Torri

What wonderful photos, thank you for posting them.

    My best guesses….

Number 8 is in Ta’ Xbiex, he is sat on ir-Rampa Ta’ Xbiex around house number 33. Those barriers are still there as is much of Manoel Island in the background.

Number 9 is taken close to number 8. They appear to be at a swimming spot that is still popular in Summer on ix-Xatt in Ta’ Xbiex. You can see the corner of the Valletta/Floriana Bastions on the right of the photo which is still there thankfully.

As for the ‘office’ in Photo 3. Seeing as the other photos are in Ta’ Xbiex I’d guess this house was also there. The style is common for that area and thankfully a lot of the older houses are still intact there (many of them are now embassies for various countries). The balconeys with pillars on either side of the entrance door and the windows are pretty distinctive but I saw nothing on google maps that looked identical. It is possible that house is no longer there of course.

If its not the same photos which were already on reddit or maybe FB, there were similar photos by ex-servicemen and I think the locations where identified mostly.

dunno how to find them though

2 could be Floriana, next to the Kristu Re monument in front of Hotel Phoenicia. The area is known as Tal-Biskuttin.

Hi OP I can tell you that 3 and 4 are the same location as the same building can be seen in the background. The lack of buildings around it does not suggest ta xbiex, it was fairly well built around there at the time.

One of the them reads “the office”. If you could tell us what he did it could give clues. A lot of the airforce and related workforce to the air division were housed in mtarfa, and at least one of the photos leads me to believe it might have been taken in that area.
As others suggested, there are some Facebook groups which have people far more knowledgeable than we might be

    3 might be this: [https://www.google.com/maps/@35.9110474,14.4935976,3a,75y,359.61h,102.63t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sXoXZCWk7lZiQ4vkkdcboEw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-12.629623543270341%26panoid%3DXoXZCWk7lZiQ4vkkdcboEw%26yaw%3D359.6051498491629!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTIwNC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D](https://www.google.com/maps/@35.9110474,14.4935976,3a,75y,359.61h,102.63t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sXoXZCWk7lZiQ4vkkdcboEw!2e0!6shttps:%2F%2Fstreetviewpixels-pa.googleapis.com%2Fv1%2Fthumbnail%3Fcb_client%3Dmaps_sv.tactile%26w%3D900%26h%3D600%26pitch%3D-12.629623543270341%26panoid%3DXoXZCWk7lZiQ4vkkdcboEw%26yaw%3D359.6051498491629!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MTIwNC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D)

nah it`s ta xbiex as shown elsewhere

  8. It looks like others have found locations for the photos where it’s possible already.
But it might be interesting taking a walk around Manoel island, since there was a lot of army activity there during WW2.

They can also visit [Mount Carmel Band Club.](https://maps.app.goo.gl/kKfCB7jHoA8bWJnRA?g_st=ic)
It’s a bar open to the public which used to be a mess hall during WW2. Perhaps your grandfather even went there a few times since he was stationed in Malta.
The proprietor Joe is very friendly and can probably tell a bit about the place or show them around.
