South Korea’s investigative authorities have imposed an exit ban on the incumbent President.

On December 9, South Korean investigative authorities imposed an exit ban on President Yoon Suk-yeol. His time is running out. He is facing numerous charges, including treason as the ringleader of an insurrection.

If these charges are proven, South Korea’s criminal law stipulates only two possible punishments for the crime of leading an insurrection: the death penalty or life imprisonment. If the charge of rebellion is added, the only punishment allowed is the death penalty.

If he is imprisoned, South Korea will have sent a former head of state to prison for the fifth time in the past 30 years. South Korea has not carried out any executions for 26 years since 1997. However, some citizens are calling for an exception to enforce the death penalty in his case.

I’m a bit confused. Is this a political or a judiciary move?
If it is the former, what are they trying to achieve?
