Source: All data from the CDC Wonder Natality Database, 2016-2023, [https://wonder.cdc.gov/natality.html](https://wonder.cdc.gov/natality.html)
Births in the US are registered with the CDC and the mother’s birth country is recorded. Very few records are missing that piece of information (only 7,990 left blank in 2023, for example)
Countries are only shaded if more than 1000 births were recorded by mothers originally from that country from 2016-2023.
It’s interesting to compare to the ratio recorded for births within the presented countries themselves, such as can be seen here: [https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/sex-ratio-at-birth](https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/sex-ratio-at-birth)
Wouldn’t this work better as a binary, two colored individual value map showing the percentage more of female vs the percentage more of male? It’s not immediately clear what I’m looking at
Large differences can only be from selective abortion or infanticide.
Apparently China is still killing baby girls despite suffering from a significant lack of women in their society.
What’s the motivation behind the colormap? I don’t see why it needs a two colour diverging colour map like that
Wow, that contrast between Egypt and Sudan.
Worth noting that this map can be a bit misleading since grey is the average of all countries, not true equal sex ratio. True equal sex ratio is almost red here, since very few countries have more female than male births.
