This is something I feel very strongly about and actively try and support

I went to the Swiss Abilities Messe in Luzern on Saturday

It’s absolutely incredible how much “stuff” there is for people with disabilities that you just never see in every day life

The main barrier that I saw was simply the cost of it all, I knew all of the specialist equipment is obviously going to be a little more expensive to produce but I was really taken aback at how much extra it all cost compared to the “normal version” of it, we’re talking double the price.

You want a VW Caddy? 30k please

Oh you want a VW Caddy with a wheelchair lift in the back, an extending front seat and hand controls for ac/deceleration? That’ll now be 65k

Small soft cushion the size of a dinner plate that plays soothing music and vibrates at a slow rate? CHF 865 please, and no IV won’t pay for this

I was talking to a few people and they said that IV won’t pay for everything and it’s on a case by case basis – quite often the people with the disabilities are just stuck trying to make do, this leads to them often living very sheltered lives. The secret ingredient to having the possibility for a high QoL with a disability is having lots of money

Going to this made me also realise how inaccessible other events (think Olma) are. There was plenty of space between exhibitions for wheelchairs, the lights weren’t super bright, there was no music, there were ramps everywhere, hearing aid support everywhere, all dietary information readily available for any food, people spoke to guests quietly and clearly, it was right next to the train station so no messing around with wheelchairs on buses fighting with crowds of people

I think a lot is done in Switzerland to support people with disabilities compared to a lot of places, but we’re still very far behind and there’s a lot that can still be done to let everyone enjoy this over things in life

A discount and a steep ramp up some stairs isn’t enough
