Is that really the reason the crowds haven’t returned to Makariou or is it just because buying habits have changed? Any lefkosiates that can let us know?
There used to be a general pattern — whenever Makariou did well, Ledra street didn’t. Whenever Ledra did well, Makariou didn’t.
I hate going downtown because of the lack of parking situation. But a fully pedestrianised Makariou doesn’t appeal to me either. There’s just nothing there for me.
Honestly, Makariou was already dead from before, and it all was downhill after Capital Centre starting drying up the moment Jumbo and Woolworth’s left. You have insane rent prices that doesn’t reflect reality so you really have nothing interesting opening there, and when something does open up, it closes after a year. Going to the malls is simply more convenient.
This is dumb. Cars aren’t going to make people want to shop at these stores. They have to make the area appealing to people. Attitudes have changed. People want to spend their time in a place that has character, like Ledras. What does Makarios ave have to attract people? Office buildings and unappealing, expensive stores.
The fact that some cars and buses still use the road probably does more harm than anything else. All that wasted space that would be used for markets, street performances and cafes. There are plenty of examples of successful, busy walking streets in Europe and around the world. The problem here is that they did a half measure. We’re still too attached to our cars to do it properly.
Even during their glory days of Makariou, the cars was never the issue. You were passing through Makariou to park at the any near by plots. This hasn’t changed. What did change is the stores. Most of them closed but even the ones that are open, are in the Mall’s where I’ll go there and then have my lunch or have snack before going home. The snack/fast food restaurants are all gone.
What will I do if I get hungry in Makariou? There’s no McDonalds, Burger King or any fast food restaurants or even a decent gyros. It’s coffee places which are considered high-end. You won’t go there with your formes for a quick bite.
The ages that use to go in Makariou were 13-14 up until 25 year olds back then. There was places for everyone to enjoy or even mix together. The ones that are still open are high end coffee shops and expensive restaurants for the average teen.
the pie (how much consumers spend) remains pretty much the same.
BUT, the city planners of our city decided on a choice that changed the path of our city for many decades, perhaps our entire lifetimes: to build malls. These are permanent maws, sucking spending from public space (Makariou, Old Town etc) to private space.
Removing cars was a good idea but they didn’t do it properly. They left a big paved road in the middle. A huge waste of space and completely destroys the aesthetic. Aesthetic is really important if you want people to spend time somewhere. Can anyone point to a successful European pedestrian shopping street that had a road like this dividing it in half?
Also its a pain to get there without a car. It is completely surrounded by large 4 lane roads. The old city is further from my house but I bike there way more because the linear park is connected to it. Having a few safe bike lanes feeding into Makarios would have helped a lot. Or they could have invested into some proper public transport. Imagine the amount of foot traffic would be created if there was a tram line from the Mall of Cyprus to old city via Makarios.
Cars aren’t the issue. There is a giant parking at the top of makariou. There are 2 municipal and 1 private parking on the side street opposite cosmos sport. There is a big parking behind Kotsovolos. There are several small ones on stasikratous. There is 1 municipal and 1 private opposite moondogs. There is also the one under eleftheria square. Also the one in the moat. Also a few between makariou and stasikratous. Then there is the on street parking around.
The issue is cypriots don’t have the money to go shopping. And also they’re lazy and just walking around isn’t a thing.
The other big issue is landlords still thinking they have premium real estate and wanting to charge like 5k a month for low footfall properties. City Plaza has been a wreck for 20 years. Galaxias center the same. They have been “demolishing” a bulldog opposite the shit M&S for the last 3 years. Under 360 tower after like 10 years whatever it is is still “coming soon”.
50m from makariou the place is buzzing, around Nom there are various cafes and bars all packed. Beam bar is always busy, various other cafes are busy.
If Nicosia municipality started an empty retail property tax that would force the owners to meet the market instead of hoping some rich Russian is gonna rent their shitty shop for bullshit money.
