    > *The Journal* calculated more than 70 candidates standing for five far-right parties or as part of a National Alliance, none of whom has a prospect of being elected at this stage of the weekend.

    > Many of the far-right hopefuls had hoped to make the most of momentum that they gained during the local elections, which saw five far-right candidates gain council seats.

    > Most of the far-right candidates tracked by The Journal received less than 2 percent of first preferences, though some of the figures above did manage to get above 4%

Good on Ireland for resisting the wave of far-right populism/ultra-nationalistic sentiment that has taken hold in so many other European countries.

That’s what happens when the russian trolls are busy elsewhere. That’s what normal looks like.

  3. Great news! Nice to hear good things every once in a while that involve politics.

  4. I feel like the Irish really have this whole “existence” thing figured out. Couldn’t tell you why I feel that way though.

    Irish goodbye? Yup makes sense.

Pubs? Somehow wholesome rather than seedy/trashy.

    Cussing? That’s just flavor text.

  5. Our proportional representation – single transferable vote system makes it hard for candidates too far out of the mainstream to gain a foothold. They’ll sometimes get a fair few first preference votes but as candidates get elected/eliminated they don’t gain a lot of transfers.

I wish America’s politics were more similar to Ireland’s. I’m a Democrat but heck I’d take a moderate center right conservative over a far right nut job.

Were they running in urban areas? Maybe they should stick to the rural elections? Win the countryside first, and then surround the cities. This is the ancient strategy.

Thank God. One place in the world that isn’t allowing these crazies into power

Seems the maases have thankfully decided them to be a hoarde of losers.

Delighted to see Phillip ‘The dogkicker’ Dwyer only get one vote.

Hopefully he doesn’t go back to hanging outside children’s creches if he doesn’t get into politics.

Seems like the US is the only place that wanted fascism. I guess it’s our turn to be invaded. Please come save us EU.
