The channel crossings will never stop unless we let people claim asylum in calais or let then take the ferry.

Starmer is just making a rod for his own back by leaning into this issue.

The crossings also make absolutely no difference to anything. Dozens for ferry’s full of people and hundreds of flights full of people arrive in the uk everyday. A few people of small boats isn’t even a drop in the ocean. No one should remotely give a shit.

the continued rise in Channel crossings highlights the persistant challenges in adressing this issue, regardless of the goverment in power. while labour has critisized the conservatives for their failurs, it remains unclear if their strategys such as international agreements will acheive significant results. long-term, sustainable solutions are needed, not just reactive measures

    3. as i said before. all we need to do, is give them 10% less than what the french give them.
Result: no reason to pay thousands /risk life to cross channel

    4. As much as the sub may tell you this is a good thing, it’s okay to not want them here.

Build an asylum processing centre on an uninhabited Scottish island.
Free accommodation, free food, education and medical care. No access to cash, money or illegal work. They’re safe, they’re protected. Everything they would want…right. Right?!?!

    6. Me-myself-I-2024 on

Offer them the same benefits as the country that their passport was issued from…..

      No passport no benefits

We need to stop being Europe’s dumping ground

    7. And how many before he became PM? About the same number you say?

And he became PM in the middle of summer when the conditions to cross are their best, unlike Rishi who became PM end October 2024, when the conditions to cross the channel are ropy at best?

Sounds like a nothing burger (other than the fact that the number of people is far, far to high – **70,000 people** in boat crossings in the past year.

    8. Colour me shocked! Its not about the government in power, but the organisations doing the doing, and shocker, its not like they’re not trying and haven’t been doing everything they can for years.

At what point do they pass a law that says any spare bedrooms must be used to house an international student or asylum seeker? Or to seize your home for below value price? It feels ridiculous to utter these words but it honestly feels more likely at this point than any actions at all being done to cut immigration

It’s inevitable that people will get here. It’s just that we need to get them processed ASAP upon their arrival and those that are approved can get to setting up home and those who’re rejected are deported promptly. We cannot have people crowded into hotels etc for long periods of time. That was a situation set up deliberately to be a powder keg and the Tories got what they wanted.

    11. I’m not a huge fan of Starmer but to be fair to fair he’s inherited an massively increasing inertia of backdoor travesty from to Tories. .Stopping the boats or reduction in net migration was never a day one accomplishment.

The right wing media funded by their rich paymasters will attack him as is their job but I for one will give our dear new leader to start showing result after the one year in power mark. Until then all the numbers, good or bad news is on the last lot.

Let’s let Kier navigate these choppy water with the right level of scrutiny and support because whatever side of the fence you sit on, we all should be wanting the UK to prosper.

The hotel costs are between £120-150 per night, on average.

So for 20,000 migrants for one year, at £120 that is £2.4 billion _just_ for the hotel costs alone, obviously there are lots of other costs so this is an underestimate.

The opportunity cost is insane, the Francis Crick biomedical research institute opposite St Pancras was around £700m to construct, so we could have built 3 of those instead of hosting 20,000 illegal migrants in hotels (and that is from one year old hosting only) 🙃

China and Russia are definitely partly behind this, they know it’s ruinously expensive and undermines social cohesion. I wonder if they actively fund the smuggling gangs

    13. Infinite_Room2570 on

Blame rushi. He said he’d stop the boats, and ban youth smoking and promote maths

    14. Im sure starmer rang his migrant pals up to send more boats. /s.

What did they expect, given what they inherited? Magic wand waving?

    15. Square_Sink_4090 on

Legitimately need to start sinking them to discourage them at this point

Needs an army style camp opened up. Processing and deportation services all on site. Process fast and those not eligible to stay deported quickly.

All this debate in the comments terrifies me. Guys, if you think this is bad, just wait until climate change REALLY kicks in…

1.2billion people by 2050 guys… thats the estimated figure of people to be displaced by climate change, and it’s likely understated, too, btw. They can only go up or down and and the vast majority will go up.

We need to get better and more efficient with this and fast. It doesn’t matter what we do to try stop people. They are going to come, and there are going to be more, and more, and more.

We can either let this issue consume us, create political divide and push back against the change…

Or freaking HARNESS it!! Utilise these people and their skills. Supercharge our economy USING immigration and a massively growing labour force.
