I’m fairly certain that the US, with or without California, also have an economy bigger than California.

even without California (14% of the US GDP), the US would still be the largest economy. I think that’s an important statistic to the larger picture.

God this sub has fallen off. Post a map with 3 coloured countries and it’s mapporn now.

Judging by the recent economic news out of Germany, soon you’ll be able to trim that list by one.

Don’t worry Trump will fix that. He will cut California down to size, and if it means economic collapse, that’s just Survival Of The Fittest.

Cali should leave US and be the Taiwan of US when trump takes over

  7. Yes. But they are in a 70 billion deficit. So… California is in the shitter.

I’m fairly sure california’s economy is a bit of a mirage. Inflated by tech and housing and probably various other bubbles, and all that economy doesn’t seem to have done much for a lot of it’s citizens considering the state is notorious for it’s homeless.

Though I am sure even taken into consideration the “real” number is still fairly impressive.

Imagine having this much wealth and still struggling with housing and healthcare. Priorities, California.

Is it bothering anyone else that on this map the land is colored like water and vice versa?

  11. Technically the whole US should be listed, unless the whole country contributes 0 or is negative then the US should be red too 😛

If California has such a high GDP, then what’s with all the homeless people all around (not an american, genuine question)?

But none of the red countries has more homeless people on the streets than California lol

GDP doesn’t accurately measure quality of life so it doesn’t matter

Which serves as a great example that GDP ≠ Economy size, because it can’t have a greater economy that India, for example.

California’s GDP by sector clarifies that the main culprits causing that bubble of economy are Finance, Insurance, Real Estate and Professional and Business Services.
While I agree that “service-based” economy is plausible, it’s steal a more of a risk than “manufacture-based” economy, even though the latter is also a great risk.
In my opinion only, of course.

The measuring of biggest economies by GDP is severely outdated, as there is 1 specific metric that can directly contradict the inward impact of economical scale. That metric is PPP (purchasing power parity). When the rankings are adjusted by cost of living, California ranks 12th.

Economical health at scale is determined by the local purchasing power in relation to that of the rest of the world. It requires a balance between productivity, reward, and scale. US used to rank highest based on all 3 components at the time Franklin D. Roosevelt was president. Those days are long gone. Now, the US no longer dominates productivity, has piss poor rewards, and has lost the battle of scale.

If it wasn’t for the USD being the world’s reserve currency, the entire country would drop to 5th based on GDP alone.

  17. How many planets we need to people all over the world live as Californian?
Maybe Americans are cancers.. And biggers economies of course..

Is it just inflated IT stuff or is there something else produced there?
