  1. Not good for anyone at all. Trump has to look tough for his dictator buddies I guess.

  2. >“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

    >Trump said the tariffs would remain in place until the two countries clamp down on drugs, particularly fentanyl, and migrants crossing the border illegally.

The USD/CAD exchange rate just spiked on this basically a tweet

This will be brutal on Canada. Our manufacturing sector is already unproductive. Adding a tariff on top will be devastating

This is DEFCON 1 for Canadian industry. It would hurt us far more then it could possibly hurt the U.S…another reason that Canadian Trump fans are some of the most delusional people around.

EDIT: you literally cannot understate how ruinous this would be for the Canadian state. Immediate, and deep recession across every single sector. Mass layoffs, social unrest. Ottawa should do every *single* thing in its power to fight back against or appease this.

25% tariff on Canadian oil it is then! A knee cap for a knee cap, that seems fair, right?

You have to wonder how long Trump’s leash is with moderate/establishment Republicans and red state governors in states that rely on Canadian products.

This guy is truly going to tank all of North America’s economy. Let’s just take one example: Automakers. They have their manufacturing spread out between Canada, USA and Mexico to keep all countries happy. They would be destroyed by this kind of nonsense and can’t just move all manufacturing back to the USA on a moment’s notice.

Going to be amazing when Trump voters finally realise it’s Americans that pay the tariffs on goods not the country selling them and the price for building materials like wood and steel shoot up to covid prices.

Put tariffs on the US until they stop the smuggling of firearms into Canada.

/s, kind of. Play his stupid game.

I just read Bob Woodward’s book and he highlights several different times about how obsessed with trade deficits Trump would get.

Trump really didn’t (and still doesn’t) understand that having a trade deficit with a country because the US buys a lot of cheap goods from them, isn’t a bad thing. In the 6 year old mind of Donald Trump, though, a “deficit” means “we give them more money than they give us” which is dumb

So he’s promising that U.S. companies will have to pay a tariff themselves on everything they import from Canada and Mexico, right. I think someone needs to tell Trump for the umpteenth time how tariffs work.

Fine…. See how the US people react when their prices go up. So many juicy upcoming /r/leopardsatemyface posts.

  13. Very well. Cease the transfer of hydroelectric power from Quebec to New York State and New England.

Everytime in history that the USD has been very strong compared to CAD has resulted in everything from manufacturing sector booms, film and television, etc etc.. Canada becomes a cheaper america that is literally closer to the states than some states.

what a horribly stupid idea by trump

I wonder if Canadian lumber will be cheaper in Canada if they have excess supply as a result of reduced shipments to the US

  16. Pretty sure this is a violation of the treaty terms he negotiated during his first term in office.

  17. imfar2oldforthis on

So 25% on Canada and Mexico where they have free trade agreements in place and 10% on China where there is no such agreement.

Also, sounds like 0% on Russia….lol

This will be a fun recession…at least I can laugh at all the morons who celebrated on FB when Trump won. Its the small joys in life

  19. There’s going to a great depression… Tariffs helped make the last one. This is gonna get fucking ugly.

  20. dirkprattlerxst1 on

ELI5 – how can he do this when we recently signed a new trade deal? you’d think there would be a provision about tariffs and restrictions on their imposition

does this end up in the courts?
