5+ years for a toy gun. People who have done actual harm to others often don’t get that long.

The article doesn’t have too many details. I feel like we also need more context. I suppose the fact he had ammunition says that there was intent to use it, however the sentence seems quite heavy.

The government in the US have admitted they monitor 3d printing websites and people who buy 3d printing consumables because of people printing guns off, even though in most states in the US it’s not illegal to do so, so it wouldn’t surprise if our government here is doing exactly the same here where it most definitely is illegal to own a handgun and this is how he got found out. Maybe he was just very indiscrete with who he told though.

Some of the apologist idiotic comments on here acting like he was printing his own Lego.

He looks like exactly the sort of jabroni who would print a gun. You wouldn’t download a car

The haircut is the real crime.

In seriousness 5 years afaik is the absolute sentance for firearm possesion so getting 5yr 2 month is not unsuprising. Even if he was just mucking about with the printer and had no ill intent it’s not something he should really be shocked by.

Though the fact that Balu person managed to get off with a lower sentence I am a little suprised by, it seems incredible you can have an actual loaded pistol on you when the police grab you for acting suspiciously and get the absolute minimum sentence. Though of course one could argue manufaturing means it was a more serious offence, and the fact his house was being searched to begin with probably suggests some suspicious behaviour we’re not told of (unless it the printing file was a “sting”). As far as I can tell firearm manufacturing in the UK carries a minimum 3 years so he is lucky it is being served concurrently with the possesion.

    7. If he had access to ammunition, why didn’t he just buy a real gun instead of making a pretend one? I question what the police even mean by “ammunition”. Do they actually means rounds, with casing and primers?

I fancied making a coil gun and decided against it as it could easily be considered as a firearm. It’s surprising how “slow” something can leave a firearm. Think I calculated it at 30mph which isn’t exactly fast. All this was all back of the envelope at the time so probably out.

      You wouldn’t steal a television!!!

      You wouldn’t steal a car!!!

      You wouldn’t print a gun!!!

Making a crude firearm is so easy. The more difficult part is the ammo. You literally just need something like a couple of pipes and a nail to make a gun. But you need primer and gunpowder to send a projectile down the pipe.
