When I hear her name, there are some things coming to mind automatically

    – immigrants
    – by by nuclear energy
    – hello gas by Putin
    – no Ukraine for NATO

That’s all. She has a real legacy.

Better stay quiet hidden in that 30 people village… You done enough damage already.

There are people who should dig a deep hole, crawl into it, and never leave it. Gas Angela, however, is a person about whom Kohl was right – not an ounce of dignity, nor the ability to eat with a spoon and fork.

Nobody could have seen it coming that it is a bad idea to become dependent for energy needs on a country whose “experts” on their main state TV channel for more than a decade call for a nuclear strike on Berlin.

WW3 is your legacy for sucking Putin’s dick and working with him against EU interests to support his hybrid war

Why is she under fire in any way possible?

Its not a matter of Germany, its a matter of EU collectively. EU has no foreign policy on significant matters. Thats one of the main reasons Ukraine war has become a thing.

Maybe pursuit of NATO membership triggered Russia, maybe it didn’t and Russia would’ve invaded anyway, maybe Ukraine should’ve been armed heavily, maybe EU should’ve been very firm from the begining. But none of that matters. For a country that should be in the sphere of influence of EU, EU had practically handed its foreign policy about Ukraine to US, whom had NOTHING to lose from a possible war.

I don’t blame her. I blame everyone in the EU for lacking a backbone and for not being able to have a proper foreign policy.

I remember how Zelenskyy invited her to come to Bucha in April 2022 and she refused.

If anybody is wondering why she’s all over the headlines as of late: she has a book coming out. It’s just marketing.

It’s so crazy that an entire generation was raised under the idea that Merkel was a great leader and that same generation is now watching everyone trash her.

My question is why did Germans keep electing her party then? Germany is not an autocracy, she remained in power for 16 years because Germans wanted it, not because she stole the power. Now they’re complaining. Maybe Germans themselves made mistakes and are trying to pin it on her?

Nord stream, shutting down nuclear plants and underestimating Russia, is what she will be remembered for.

Truth is also that she was elected four times as she promised – and delivered – no pain, no reforms, happy endings. And obviously neglected investments and preparing Germany for the challenges of the early 21st century.

So Merkel’s mistakes are also those of her electorate, which used to be proud of her but is in denial of their erstwhile support for her now.

    Stagnation – that’s her legacy

She is technically a dictator, yeah yeah I know her party won the election, but the grip she has on German politics and economy was so strong, it’s only her way and her way alone, and now look at the consequences

Almost everyone I talked to during her time said that I am crazy or stupid to criticize her, glad I was not a sheep, their insults were actually compliments

Any Germans that can add some nuance here? Your girl is getting roasted in the comments.

Angela Merkel’s policies have been so destructive to Europe I sometimes wonder if she was a secret FSB operative. Flooding Europe with migrants, leading in part to brexit and internal conflict in the EU, eliminating nuclear energy so Germany became even more reliant on Russian energy, refusal to seriously respond to Russia after the annexation of Crimea, possibly leading Russia to expect a weak response from Europe and deciding to invade in 2022 (to name a few). She strikes me as criminally incompetent.

  15. This Merkel narrative for last couple of years should be studied. I get bad smells about this.

  16. Shirolicious on

I see she has little self reflection and stands firm behind her decisions and does not acknowledge anything as bad or wrong, even now.

    Good she is gone

  17. Another thread in r/europe full of disinformation, one-liner polemics without basis in reality and other shining examples of social media “education”. And the only people who have read the article are downvoted. You don’t have to like her to stay even a little factual, you know.

Germany was Ukraine’s biggest financier and supporter before the war.

Russia’s GDP was halved due to the unprecedented sanctions in 2014 after the invasion and Merkel was leading those efforts, wanted to deepen them and had to defend the sanctions for years against her country’s industry leaders and other EU countries.

Which is why shortly before the invasion Zelensky personally awarded her the highest honor of Ukraine for her and Germany’s efforts “for outstanding personal merits in strengthening Ukraine–Germany interstate cooperation, support for state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

Without her peace brokering, Ukraine would have been rolled in 2014 or even earlier, when they had no military cohesion, no training, no experience and no weapons. Zelensky acknowledged that and defended her multiple times in plenty of interviews.

Germany was also the only country that actually took more money out of the Russian economy than it put in.

Nord Stream 2 specifically was a private endeavor paid for mostly by Russia and private companies from many different countries all across Europe. It never carried gas and ultimately just damaged the Russian economy, serving exactly its purpose as an economic tie-in to make dictatorial ambitions bear heavy costs.

Germany’s nuclear industry was reliant on Russia for both its material and reactor technology. Putin himself urged Germany to keep it. Nuclear energy would have meant more heavy reliance on Russia. But since it’s Reddit’s darling, that’s suddenly no problem I suppose.

Germany’s gas reliance was at or below the EU average. They came off it in just a few months while other EU countries with fewer barriers didn’t even try. The nuclear exit also had no bearing on it, since Germany’s main gas usage is in the chemical and heavy industry and residential heating. And that’s been the case for 50 years.

That’s really what this is about for her isn’t it, her legacy…

  19. AldrichOfAlbion on

She single-handedly destroyed Europe. She invited mass unregulated migration which has never eased since the time she called for everyone to come to Europe. She pushed for Nord Stream and continued reliance on Russian energy when everyone else was saying it made Europe too reliant on an adversarial power.

I don’t know how she’s viewed in Germany but to me she is the stereotypical 2010s liberal… someone who pretended to be enlightened while pushing her country and the entire continent further into chaos.

  20. She was one of the worst politicians, she caused so much trouble for everyone:

    – immigrant waves causing the rise of far right in whole EU

    – resigning from nuclear energy

    – Nordstream and reliance on russian energy, which made Russia ready for war

So now we’re close to World War 3, Ukraine is dying, and fascism is riding everywhere. She should really shut up.

  21. schmerz12345 on

Her takes on Putin were were as expected naive and defensive even if I agree with her on Trump.

Incapable of admitting a mistake or failure and a total lack of accountability.

Terrible personality traits that seemingly coincide with political aspirations.
