Can’t expect China to respect Canadian sovereignty when even the US won’t.

> “No one denies Russia has significant Arctic interests,” Pompeo said in a transcript of remarks circulated by the U.S. State Department. “We recognize that Russia is not the only nation making illegitimate claims. The U.S. has a long-contested feud with Canada over sovereign claims through the Northwest Passage.”

This was said during Trump’s first term. We shouldn’t expect things to be any different now. Canada is alone in the world on its stance regarding the NWP. Everyone else benefits from the NWP being international waters. If we are serious about our sovereignty, we need to be ready to go it alone. We need investments in the Arctic *now.*
