    in Brief:

    * The chair of the United States House intelligence committee says Canada needs to accelerate its defence spending targets, especially with its military in “desperate” need of investment. “You’re already past due,” Ohio Republican Rep. Mike Turner told CTV’s Question Period host Vassy Kapelos in an exclusive interview airing Sunday.
    * NATO members agreed to the two per cent of GDP target at the Wales Summit a decade ago and pledged to meet that goal by this year. According to NATO figures, 23 of 32 member countries are on track to meet the pledge this year, while Canada has no plan to do so until 2032.
    * Turner added. “I think even if you look at other metrics, the Canadian military needs desperate investment right now. It’s military equipment, it’s personnel, it’s training.”
    * “It was an agreement. It wasn’t a policy debate,” Turner said. “It wasn’t something for them to go back to and decide later whether or not they would do it.”
    * The congressman added the failure of members to meet the spending goal is “not just theoretical,” but rather impedes the alliance’s ability to really fulfil its collective deterrence purpose.

I have a feeling the US is going to make it hell for Canada over the next few years. Trade wars, tariffs, immigration issues. Everyone saying trump won’t tariff Canadian oil and gas. Why not? They don’t really need our oil and gas and Trump is all for ramping up production down there.

  3. Hard to argue with this. Canada has clearly reneged on our promises to NATO and our commitment to the men and women who are serving and have served in our armed forces. It’s long past time to live up to our sides of the bargains.

  4. Don’t worry, PP said he will use his “tough talk” to keep our military spending low, and focus on “Canada” instead.

I listened to a podcast from Citation Needed on the US Invasion of Grenada, and I think something like that really shows you the mindset of the US and other countries. Basically, they invaded because they hadn’t been at war since Vietnam and they needed to wreck some shit. Ronald Regan used excuses like building an airport to try to make people think it was some potential soviet strike coming. They did it because it’s the US and they like to be at war.

I think a lot of countries, Canada included, just assumed whatever military issue happened, the US would deal with it, because that’s what they do. Now, you don’t know what’s going to happen with the US. Will it become a Russian puppet state? Will Trump leave NATO? Will they become more isolationist? I think that’s why Canada does need to up its military. We need to band together with NATO and beef things up.

What’s funny is, if World War 3 were to happen, Germany would likely be the leader of the free world and on the right side of history.
