The Imperial Household Agency has announced that the funeral of the late Princess Yuriko of Mikasa will cost approximately 325 million yen. This represents an increase of around 60 million yen compared to the funeral of Prince Mikasa eight years ago, due to rising costs and inflation.

The Agency confirmed that the necessary cost for the funeral, which took place on October 15 following the passing of Princess Yuriko, will be approximately 325 million yen. On October 22, the Japanese Cabinet approved an additional 320 million yen to be allocated from contingency funds.

It has already been agreed in the October 15 Cabinet meeting that the funeral expenses will be covered by national funds.

In 2016, when Prince Mikasa passed away, the cost of his funeral was approximately 265 million yen, meaning this year’s funeral expenses have increased by around 59 million yen.

Although there is no need to create a new burial site this time, which has helped reduce related costs, the Imperial Household Agency explained that the rise in funeral costs can be attributed to factors such as increased labour and material costs for the funeral arrangements, the increase in consumption tax from 8% to 10%, and the expenses for repairs and maintenance of the approach to the shrine.

Additionally, regarding the princess’s royal allowance, which was already paid in October for six months, it has been decided that the remaining four months’ worth, starting from December, will be calculated and returned in instalments.
