      The Science, Innovation and Technology Committee has launched a new inquiry to investigate the relationship between algorithms and the spread of false content online.

      The committee will investigate the algorithms used by social media and search engines, generative AI and if their business models encourage the spread of content that can mislead us.

      The inquiry follows on from the riots that took place across the UK this summer and were believed to be fuelled by the spread of fake news.

      Hours after the late July Southport attack, which resulted in the death of three girls, a post on X alleged that the suspect was a Muslim immigrant. Despite police denying this was true, the spread of misinformation continued, with other users later claiming the attacker was an asylum seeker.

      It is believed, this fake news posts, viewed by millions on Twitter, sparked a string of anti-immigration protest across the UK.

      According to The Guardian, Elon Musk and senior executives of Meta and TikTok have been called for questioning as part of the inquiry.

      Chair of the committee Chi Onwurah said: “The violence we saw on UK streets this summer has shown the dangerous real-world impact of spreading misinformation and disinformation across social media.

      “We shouldn’t accept the spread of false and harmful content as part and parcel of using social media. It’s vital that lessons are learnt, and we ensure it doesn’t fuel riots and violence on our streets again.”

      Algorithms serving you your entertainment makes some sense, you’ll only want to watch/play/listen to what you like. 

      But an algorithm that decides to only show you the news you want to read (the news that agrees with you) has been shown to be incredibly dangerous.

      False content like Rachel Reeves invented the whole concept of Algorithms by copy and pasting her CV in her coffee break in between making the Bayeux tapestry and building the great wall of China.

      It’s a good thing I only get my news from the BBC. I do not not want any bias in my world view or misinformation.

      Wasn’t the algorithm that misinformed about the stock port terrorist, it was the government.

      The frequency of Andrew twat 10 second clips that show up on my feed… What the fuck? The gay family ones? I’m down for that. One preaching hatred and fear, one preaching love and acceptance. I’m a 42 year old straight white married man and I’ve got to be honest, I’ve been inundated with the hatred part. Constantly. Fuck your bias! I just wanted to watch dudes build cabins and cabinet’s and see new ides for recipes. I don’t want a chinless wonder waffling on about how he is a superstar supreme being because he has a mummy issue. (Fuck you Tate you’re a taint on humanity).

      It’s about time we regulate social media the same way we do any other. Give Ofcom jurisdiction to treat the companies as if they were publishing media like the BBC or a radio station. Moderate the platforms or get massive fines

      I set all my feeds to incognito and when I took at what is “trending” it is mostly incindiary nonsense.

      It’s no different to the BBC only opening HYS on the most hot of topics – it generates engagement.

      I do think that when algorithms became the default mode between 2015-2017, social media turned particularly vile. 

      Completely hijacks your attention. It went from the chronological format, which was manageable as you were only seeing what **you** opted-in to seeing, be it friends or family. Now it’s the opposite, I barely ever see a post from my friends these days. 

      It’s like when you check the fridge to see if any food has magically appeared. You habitually open the fridge, nothing’s updated, and you close it back up again. 

      But now when you open the fridge, it magically generates fast food and chocolate and you can’t stop coming back for more.
