    ***TLDR***

The article contends that right-wing pressure on social media platforms, combined with decreased moderation, enabled misinformation to spread during the recent election, ultimately contributing to Donald Trump’s victory. It asserts that tech companies prioritised profit over the importance of fact-checking, resulting in an electorate misled about critical issues such as crime and inflation. The author criticises Silicon Valley’s alignment with Trump, suggesting that this could lead to deregulation and diminished misinformation oversight, further threatening democratic discourse.

  2. Trump and Musk teaming up to dominate social media is a dystopian nightmare straight out of a cyberpunk novel. This isn’t about “free speech” or “connecting people”—it’s about consolidating power, silencing dissent, and controlling the narrative. These greed lords don’t just want to shape what you see online; they want to control how you think and act.

Look at Musk’s track record: gutting moderation on X (formerly Twitter), giving extremists a platform, and prioritizing engagement over accountability. Pair that with Trump’s authoritarian instincts and history of weaponizing disinformation, and you’ve got a recipe for a digital propaganda machine designed to destabilize democracy while profiting off the chaos.

Everyday people will be caught in the crossfire. Misinformation will spread faster than ever, hate speech will become normalized, and voices critical of power will be drowned out or banned outright. Meanwhile, these billionaires will rake in profits, exploiting our clicks, our data, and our trust in democratic systems.

This partnership isn’t about innovation or progress. It’s about turning social media into a tool of oppression, enriching the elite while stripping away the last vestiges of truth and transparency. If we don’t push back, we’re handing them the keys to control not just the internet, but the future of free expression itself.

Oh this long predates social media, just media in general.

The hard lesson from Nixon that conservatives learned is to control the narrative as early as possible even if you have to twist the truth to do it. Its no secret the Nixon impeachment was literally the catalyst for Fox News creator Roger Ailes to create a news organization that purposely championed conservatives.

Not to mention people often forget Ailes didnt just create Fox News… he created MSNBC as well, originally a much more right slanted channel called Americas Talking before being ousted for behind the scenes calling then NBC owner David Zaslav a “little fucking jew prick” when Zaslav pushed him to be more neutral in the networks tone. His departure lead to being hired by Murdoch. But its not surprise that Ailes was the media manager for not just Nixon… but Reagan, Bush, and even Rudy Giuliani when he ran for NYC mayor.

Republicans took the lesson of control the narrative and fuck facts to heart after being embarased by Nixons departure. Many of them still say to this day Nixon shouldnt have had to resign and Watergate was not a impeachable offense despite the absolute litany of crimes that were committed. Thats another thing people often forget… Watergate wasnt just the break in at the hotel… it was the fact that in investigating the break in they literally found the Nixon admin was illegally bugging Democrat and even rival Republican lawmakers, illegally harassing liberal activist groups with the DOJ and FBI. Creating fake crimes they charged rivals with and a whole host of illegal activities, many off them federal offenses. And many of those people who were involved directly not only escaped prosecution.. but went on to serve under Reagan, Bush, and Trump.

People cite the lack of actually pursuing legal action from the first Trump admin as the failure that lead to him remaining in control of the Republican party like he has. Reality is… it was the failure to go after Nixon and everyone directly involved in his administration including Bush, Reagan, Roger Stone, and Ailes that lead to how politics is today.

Well, ya. Facts and empirical evidence are dense, complicated, and often boring. Bullshit and conspiracy are much more captivating with short video.

That’s a long winded way of saying Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk green lit more Russian bots on their platforms months before the election.

  8. These comments are…just sigh. Leftie echo chamber. And I’m Scandinavian left.

  9. Uh-oh. Social media is bad now now that the Republicans have any leverage over it… as opposed to that Golden Era when it was 95% Democratic partisans and progressive true believers who were moderating for the Greater Good.

(Side note: The solution to all of this is dis-empowering social media and Big Tech generally, so that it doesn’t matter too much what one company decides to do to try to put their thumb on the scales of national discourse.)

While we’re at it, what about the left dominance over basically all pop culture of the last decades and most cultural institutions?
