  1. >The practice, first reported by 404 Media in April, has since exploded in popularity, showing Instagram is unable or unwilling to stop the flood of AI-generated content on its platform and protect the human creators on Instagram who say they are now competing with AI content in a way that is impacting their ability to make a living.
    >
    >According to our review of more than 1,000 AI-generated Instagram accounts, Discord channels where the people who make this content share tips and discuss strategy, and several guides that explain how to make money by “AI pimping,” it is now trivially easy to make these accounts and monetize them using an assortment of off-the-shelf AI tools and apps. Some of these apps are hosted on the Apple App and Google Play Stores. Our investigation shows that what was once a niche problem on the platform has industrialized in scale, and shows what social media may become in the near future: a space where AI-generated content eclipses that of humans.

    >Alexios Mantzarlis, the director of the security, trust, and safety initiative at Cornell Tech and formerly principal of Trust & Safety Intelligence at Google, compiled a list of around 900 accounts 404 Media reviewed in its investigation. Mantzarlis, who stumbled on one of these accounts while casually using Instagram, said he started researching the AI-generated influencer accounts because it might show us where AI-generated content is taking social media and the internet more broadly, where he sees a “a rising blended unreality.”

Likely Instagram is only the tip of the iceberg here. Without proper policies as well as controls in place to manage this flood of LLMs taking over social networks, it’s likely that the dystopian future envisioned where most online interaction is robots interacting with robots will come to pass sooner than anticipated.

  2. If anything, this should be a sign that influencers shouldn’t be making money anyways. A lot of them have sold crypto and nft scams. Also their “buy my course” or “pay for my newsletter membership” was also bullshit

  3. Always impressed with the amount of research 404media does on these exposes.

AI may be an alien level technology, that’s why all this awareness of aliens and sightings is happening now. If we master this technology we will be as advanced as them. AI will unlock what we don’t understand about movement that they understand. It will help us evolve beyond physical bodies. It will help us develop crafts like they have.

And Instagram is rapidly becoming useless and uninteresting as a result. I hope Meta cracks down on it (lol! NGH).

A long time ago, we used to say, at some point, we better get our act together and plan for what happens when artificial intelligence arrives.

    It’s time.

The influencer realm has become quite saturated even before AI /LLM. Anyone doing it and didn’t realize that it was a finite cash cow was not looking very far ahead into the future. A lot of businesses are finite unless they can adapt and change their offerings as needed.

Just stop using instagram and facebook and your worries are over..

This is one thing I hope AI excels at: making influencers irrelevant

A few years ago, the discussion was about influencers creating a false view of the world and stealing content. Well none care this should have been the red flag that this market was doomed to fail at some point.

What’s wrong with AI, anyway? If that’s what people want, let them have it.

I don’t understand. Do these accounts act like they’re human or are they openly shilling AI pics and people still like it?
