  1. In the 90s Brazil would have been fully colored red and orange, there was crazy progress in 30 years.

China has made some seriously impressive strides. Less than a century ago, it was one of the least developed countries in the world. Now, there’s a fairly decent standard of living throughout most of the country (political situation notwithstanding).

As for Mexico, my country, I’m proud of all the progress we’ve made, but disappointed at how often we’ve let others or ourselves set the country back. It could be way worse, but certainly it could be better. If safety were a factor in calculating HDI, we’d be near the bottom of the rung.

How much does government play a factor in this index? I want to know how much China is getting docked for being an authoritarian state and how much Mexico is being helped by having a democracy

At least on paper, Mexico benefited a lot from the American industry moving there, but it’s still wild to me that they moved exactly at the very border.
