without a date who can say if this was ever true, but certainly those figures are not correct today.

yeah poor countries are fucked up since they work for rich countries 🙂

    3. Why does your title include apartment? The chart doesn’t say that. In some of these countries houses will be more likely

Something seems off, otherwise there wouldn’t be so much outcry nowadays about housing in specifically the major green countries in this map

    5. Ireland?? We have literally the worst housing crisis maybe in the world.

Why did Georgia become Armenia? Based on the colouring, Armenia doesn’t seem to have any data included (which itself is regrettable), but the text says otherwise?

this map would be better off saying – average years to buy a house on average annual salary, the percent is just messing it out.

    8. The Japan number is ridiculous – there are almost no apartments > 100sqm and those are almost universally luxury apartments. Even people with families rarely look at apartments > 70sqm

    9. People complaining about accuracy need to realize this is normalized by average salary within said country. Smh first world privileges

A variation of this was posted recently. Using average rather than median salary is questionable, especially for countries with high inequality. In South Africa, I’d guess property price is about half what they have here, but median household income is about 10 times less.

Which puts years to buy at like 28

I think it’d be also important to consider interest rates. because they can differ significantly from country to country

It’s weird how housing prices are only an issue in the green countries

    13. But is it so affordable in the US because you basicly build Paper homes ?

    14. Secret_Squire1 on

There is a lot of generalizing in this map. 1. Using averages where wealth inequalities are higher 2. Not taking into account countries where you can write interest of a mortgage off your taxes 3. Property associated taxes such as in the US 4. For the US, we have a wide variety of state taxes. 5. Taking into account public mobility. In the Netherlands you can work in Amsterdam is live a in an area given a 1 hour commute with trains 6. Employer benefits such as car or transport scheme making it easier to commute.

    15. In this thread, westerners stunned that developing countries have it harder than them.

In Russia it’s become so much worse, inflation plus preferential mortgage program managed to make house prices skyrocket, in some cities like Moscow, monthly mortgage is higher than average salary. You can’t afford your apartment if you are just a regular citizen with a regular job, it is impossible

    17. I imagine Palestine at 6th most affordable you have trouble getting cheap insurance for the house.

Some believe this map for a second, Australia has terrible housing affordability and it’s the biggest national crisis at this time

    19. Western_Necessity on

Don’t know about other country’s but in the Netherlands you won’t get a £311.500 mortgage with a yearly income of £26000.

Max mortgage would be around £117.000, and for that price you won’t find anything.

Even with 2 average salary’s around £52000 the offer of housing at the moment is rare.

I’m sorry but this map is dumb. First of all average (vs median) salary is incredibly misleading because some countries have more millionaires/billionaires than others. Then it uses national averages for house prices, which again can be hugely misleading where countries have disproportionate values in regions.

This should be done using cities or for simplicity capital cities vs median wage to have any relevant meaning.

lmfao yeah the housing crisis in the US is nothing compared to…Ethiopia

Lol, this data is super out of date for Canada, or the methodology is flawed. Average home price is like 700k CDN, so like 500k £. Yes, for homes around 100sqm. And that’s in a small city, forget most major ones.

That’s very interesting. However, it doesn’t say the source. Anybody knows?

Why is Puerto Rico listed as a separate country when it’s part of the United States?

Dude I am from Spain and I can confirm that the guy that made this map is definitely tripping

    26. Hong Kong = Sri Lanka, Wow! Canada in green, I keep hearing that their real estate market is really over priced, how come ?

    27. CleaverIam on

How is the average cost to buy an apparent. That would vary wildely depending on size and location
