I do think climate change is the biggest catastrophe to affect humanity, and not enough people are taking it seriously.
However, the next election won’t be motivated or won on climate change solutions. It will be on people’s wallets, and the last thing on people’s minds, unfortunately, is the environment.
To make things more bleak, Poilievre is going to become Prime Minister and he will probably eliminate the carbon tax within his first 100 days. Canada’s oil and gas sector is going to benefit from a CPC government. And I have little faith that CPC policies will attempt to even address climate change. So all the stats on this chart are going to just get worse.
It’s going to be much harder for us to benchmark with Europe for basic reasons. Europe and Canada are vastly different places. We have a much colder climate (+per capita emissions for heating) and larger geography (+per capita emissions for transportation).
Fine comparison to make but its worth understanding why we are probably going to fall short. Approaches we will have to take are going to be much different than Europe.
Our biggest source of emissions is oil & gas production.
We could have a massive reduction of emissions if we were willing to phase out an industry that’s currently 3% of our GDP.
At the very least, we could stop subsidizing it?
