>On Tuesday, the Odessa City Council voted 5-1 to maintain its bathroom ban and allow individual citizens (whether or not they are Odessa or even Texas residents) to sue a trans person for a minimum of $10,000 in damages if they violate it (there is no cap on how large the bounty can be). It also approved an expansion of the law. Once applied only to public facilities, it will now apply to private ones as well.
>“The trans community is not a threat to Odessa or anyone in the bathroom,” added Matilda Mann-Morales, president of local LGBTQ+ group [Out in West Texas](https://www.outinwesttexas.org/). “We’re just trying to live out our lives. I don’t want the government in the bathroom.”
>Speakers also argued that trans people have not historically posed any risk to people in the bathroom and are instead statistically far more at risk of being abused or harassed while trying to use facilities. *Lonestar Live* reported that Odessa police have not received any report about public restrooms in three years, and [police in several states](https://www.washingtonblade.com/2016/03/31/predictions-of-trans-bathroom-harassment-unfounded/) have said they have been unable to identify any cases of trans people harassing anyone in a public bathroom.
>A [letter](https://www.aclutx.org/sites/default/files/2024.11.11_-_letter_to_odessa_city_council.pdf) from the ACLU of Texas to the Odessa City Council and Mayor Javier Joven, pointed out that the last-minute addition of private facilities in the legislation is a likely violation of the Texas Open Meetings Act because the city did not “provide adequate notice to business owners and Odessa residents that the local government was exposing them to immense liability on private property.”
This is textbook genocide. They are trying to eradicate trans people from being able to exist in any capacity anywhere. That’s so vile.
Trans people just want to use the restroom in quiet peace, and Christian nationalist mossbacks like Republicans in Odessa just want to terrorize trans people out of human existence. All the while, centrists and certain people here on r/politics treat this sort of genocidal hate as “debate”, as if trans people deserve to be terrorized for being who they are. What a joke this timeline is, right now!
Why the fuck do they care if they use a bathroom?
And you just know, as seems to be the case with all anti-trans stuff, it will inevitably lead to misogyny and policing women who “don’t look cis enough”
Because funnily enough the anti-trans brigade couldn’t give a fuck if a trans-man who still looks outwardly feminine were to use the male bathroom. Hell they’d probably relish it
it’s now a game for them…hunting humans.
Aside from being downright bigoted, this is also just pathetic (which bigotry tends to be). Do the people that enact and support these laws have a complete meltdown every time they travel to another country, or even another state, where there are unisex bathrooms and/or people can piss in peace in whatever bathroom they prefer? Wait, the answer is yes, because there are even videos of them doing exactly this! Having complete meltdowns!
Just incredibly weak of mind and character. Pathetic.
Nazis gave 1Kg of Sugar for every Jew that was reported
There are certainly going to be a *lot* of cisgendered people who will be misidentified as trans in this fervor to out folks for money. And more trans people are going to be attacked for [using the “right” (according to the city) restroom](https://trans-express.lgbt/post/113452742396/trans-man-takes-on-selfie-campaign-to-fight) than actually correctly identified as trans when in the “wrong” restroom, especially in the case of being trans male.
What the fuck.
Why does this exist?
Question: does this law include cis people who use the “wrong” bathroom? I’ve seen dads take their daughters into the ladies’ room, and I’ve seen women use the men’s room when the other line was too long. Where’s the accountability?
Republicans: “We must stop the woke liberal government from using your tax dollars to pay for sex changes (their verbiage, not mine)!!!!”
Also Republicans: “Don’t mind us wasting your tax dollars obsessing over, legislating against, and hunting down trans folk who pose zero danger to anyone!”
Holy shit, I thought the term “bounty” might be a tad excessive, but it’s certainly not…

Lately, and by lately I mean ever since Donald Trump stepped into the political arena and began validating conservative’s prejudices, hate, phobias and paranoid delusions, Republicans have been attempting to implement legislation like this nation wide, where they essentially deputize citizens to profile, stigmatize, stereotype and discriminate against out-groups, foreigners, marginalized people, democrat voters, and anyone who might resemble an image of their radical leftist, political and cultural enemies. “The other.”
And of course, these images are reinforced by right wing fearmongering propaganda, misinformation, xenophobia, conspiracy theories, and unsubstantiated rumors.
For example:
> Speakers also argued that trans people have not historically posed any risk to people in the bathroom and are instead statistically far more at risk of being abused or harassed while trying to use facilities.
> Odessa police have not received any report about public restrooms in three years, and police in several states have said they have been unable to identify any cases of trans people harassing anyone in a public bathroom.
These legislative efforts are based in lies, and unfounded fears and grievances. These are people that, contrary to what conservatives believe, pose no threat. And ironically, it’s the lies, the propaganda, and misinformation that has turned these conservatives into the *real* threats.
I mean it’s textbook really. Republicans have created a platform that relies on culture war propaganda and fears of “the other.”
By creating such an enemy, Republicans can justify any piece of legislation, any measure, any narrative, any attitude, and even any violence that directly targets these people.
For example
> In addition to granting the right to sue, the ordinance also invokes criminal penalties for individuals who use bathrooms that align with their gender identity. The provision states that a “person violating the provisions of this ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a Class C misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine not to exceed five hundred dollars” and that anyone who refuses to use a bathroom aligned with what the city perceives as their biological sex, even after being asked to leave by a building owner, may be guilty of misdemeanor trespassing.
It’s not about facts or reality, it’s about vindicating conservative’s hate, victimhood, fears and phobias. It’s about justifying any effort to target these groups, thereby, also justifying the *feelings* that these conservatives have towards these groups.
And Republicans clutch their pearls every time the term “fascist” is used…
Expect lots more of this kind of thing in the months and years ahead. Because conservatives sense Democrats are now scared of these issues. The GOP is going to push all sorts cruel and draconian laws to win the culture war while Democrats infight over how to respond.
It would be a shame if someone abused those reporting features.
Flood the reporting lines with the names of the dipshits who pass and enforce this.
At first I didn’t think that this was in the US and then I remembered, “Oh right, large parts of the US are now a fucking hellscape.”
Is there a penalty if you make a report, but it turns out you were mistaken?
Irrelevant city (other than for crude oil), with features such as a replica Stonehenge (cringe) and an 8ft jackrabbit statue.
Not sure why anyone would want to make this place a destination…. Unless you worked for big oil.
Gfys Odessa. Drop off the fucking map for all I care. We tried this shit in Nc. It doesn’t work.
Your little bubble of bigotry can exist. None of us want anything to do with your existence.
I wonder how substantiated claims have to be. “I saw *him* in a “wrong” bathroom! And that guy (absolutely no splitsies) have seen *him* too. Where I get my paycheck?”
So, then, going to the public bathroom fully nude as a cis gender person *must* be legal, right?
Or do they simply expect people to sexually assault each other at will and random?
Oh wait, this is *Texas*. Nevermind. Keep shooting each other as you please. Continue on, good America.
Turning local population against their own citizenry for extra dollars, sounds very dystopian….
This is gross.
Good minded people should just start calling in when any Republican goes into a bathroom. Doesn’t matter who the Republican is or which bathroom, file a complaint, make them prove they are the gender they say they are, do it everywhere, at all times, to every Republican.
It’s not an accident. Fuck
With a few exceptions, most of Texas is just inhospitable now, literally no reason to visit. What an awful community to make this ordinance and prioritize demonizing the trans community. There are at least a million other things to work on the city needs far more than creating modern witch hunts on a minority class. Shameful.
Those on the Left with money should fund a group that sues the Republican city council members for this law. Every day…
Just wait till a cis conservative woman gets the policed called on her because she isn’t confirming to feminity properly then they will … Ha I can’t even get through the sentence about when the leopards come for me anywhere you imply the conservative learn from it.
They ban trans people from using the bathroom that aligns with their identity, and then assault them when they go into the “correct” one.
It’s already happened. Many times. The cruelty is the point.
Don’t these places have bigger issues than trans people? WTF has happened to our society. Guess it’s easier to hate than to actually fucking do something that helps.
So…..what’s the bounty on cis men or cis women who use the wrong bathroom? As a woman it’s worse for a cis guy to be in the ladies bathrooms than for a trans girl to be in there. The bounty on cis guys in a ladies bathroom must be huge.
Every single republican voter is a nazi. This isn’t hyperbole either. When you vote for nazi policy, you become a nazi. If you voted for this, you’re a fucking nazi.
what in the actual fuck
its stupid, discriminatory, and I guarantee there’s more instances of women using the mens room or vice versa than trans people.
Also since we’ve politicized bathrooms its absurd that we even gender 1 stall bathrooms. Stores don’t need to have a mens and womens restroom if each are single occupancy bathrooms, just make both unisex so you have 2 bathrooms.
They’re trying to scare the entire LGBT rainbow into hiding.
Revenge for all the years they were forced to hide their nazi affiliation.
