    That’s just a dick move, you should not deface the shrines of any country, especially the one that let you in. Hope the Japanese jail him and deport him

    I can’t understand why people do this anywhere, let alone in a foreign country where the laws may be more punitive compared to their home country. I hope that, in addition to not letting him in the country ever again, that they make him pay the full costs of restoration and that it isn’t cheap.

    The fact that this guy was 65 is surprising as is, “Hayes, who is alleged to have used his fingernails to etch five letters onto one of the torii gates, was identified as the suspect by security video around the shrine, the newspaper reported.” How are anyone’s fingernails strong enough to etch into wood?
